How to delete an email?

Ok, I have searched and can't find a simple answer that works 😟

I am completely new to apple, just bought an ipad2 last week. I have my email all set-up, both gmail and work email thru lotus traveler... but how do I delete email? I read something about swiping to the right and a delete box comes up, but when I do that, I just get an archive button?

And then something about an icon with a basket on the top? But I have no idea what all the icons are on the top either (completely lost, lol).

Can someone please help me? Thanks so much in advance! 🙂

With gmail you have the choice as to whether to be able to archive or delete emails : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4207

You should have icons for filing (a file with a downward arrow) i.e. move the email to a different folder
