Share (or File) => Export => choose PowerPoint
Note: some elements unique to Keynote (such as some transitions and effects) probably won't export; you can also expect some incompatibility with fonts
Note, you have to use a Mac to export the Keynote as a PPT.
My kenote presentation includes quicktime movie clips. "Exporting" them seems to work on my mac if the clips and new ppt file are in the same folder. But transfering via thumb drive to a PC will work, ...but the movie clips are just stills of the first frame. Not movies. And if I convert the whole thing to a quicktime movie, the clips work, but there's no manual control of the presentation.
Clear?
Ideas?

Powerpoint older than version 2010 only uses links not embedding. Sounds like your new file isn't linking to the movies anymore, which is common when the files are moved to another computer. So, you have to re-import all those movies into the new ppt file. Happens to me pretty much every time I get a ppt and movies on a thumb drive.
OK, so, just getting started on this ppt again, long day here. Thank you for your response.
I have Microsoft Office 2011, and 2008, both updated today. I have a fun Keynote, with movies. I guess I'll be making an entirely new ppt, from scratch then? Or, perhaps I'll export to ppt, then attempt to re-import just the movies in the right places.
Last night I used ZAMZAR to translate my Quicktime into avi, or wmv formats, though my Mac can probably do that somehow. I subscribed to ZAMZAR because I thought, wrongly it turns out, that they would translate my Kenote to ppt for me, intact with movies etc. It doesn't work that way. Basically I just got what I already had "exported" to ppt. (Hey, it was worth a try.)
So, my question is: Must I translate Quicktime movies to avi format for ppt? Is there a trick to importing movies? I wasn't able to do that last night, ...but then I haven't studied ppt at all, yet. (But then I never studied Keynote at all, ...things just fell into place like magic. Which is why we use Macs, right?)
If you say you have Powerpoint 2011 then you aren't using a pc since pc powerpoint only goes to 2010. Are you misspeaking? If you are using a mac version of powerpoint then I don't understand why you are converting at all. If you have to share a mac powerpoint with a pc ppt user there's going to be yet another set of reformatting to be done so you should go straight to the pc version.
Assuming you really meant you are going to pc powerpoint 2010:
You export out of Keynote to get you started and then you fix all the missing font, text reflow, bad graphs and animation issues that result. Then you import all the movies back into the right places. Convert all the movies to wmv files, they work the best on a pc. Click on the Insert Video button, choose the movie, size it to the slide and make a choice whether the movie starts automatically or on click. That's it.
OK, thank you again, especially for the specific "menu" instructions.
Yes, it's Microsoft Office for Mac, 2011, but our city bureaucrats do not use Macs, ...so we must translate to ppt (Microsoft) to communicate our thoughts to our City Council and Planning Commission, Park and Rec Board, etc. It's dumb because all we really need is an adaptor for their projection system(s), and away we go in Keynote, ...operated from our own familiar laptops.
The current procedure is to take a thumb drive to the city person who will plug it in and ask for the right file, ...etc. If the links aren't set up correctly, then the movies don't work, ...as we now know. I shall follow your helpful instructions and report on our success. (I mention this in case something else occurs to you about flash drives and PCs.)
Thank you again Lauri.
I can pretty much guarantee that if you only convert to Mac ppt and then give the file to someone on pc ppt, you will be disappointed. The only decent way to do this is to convert the presentation to ppt from Keynote, bring it into pc ppt and make your fixes. THEN you can hand it over to the person at the meeting and expect it to look the way you want it to. You also must use standard pc fonts like Arial or Verdana. I have both Bootcamp with Windows 7 and VMWare Fusion emulator software for quick fixes for just this purpose. I don't even own Mac powerpoint because it's a waste of time. I'm willing to bet the end computer doesn't have PPT 2010 so you better make sure the person takes all your movies AND the ppt file and puts them all together in one place so they have a chance of linking back up again.
OK, ..."export to ppt" from Keynote on my own Mac, ...load that onto a PC, ...fix it on the PC using its version of ppt, ...and standard fonts, ...convert MOV movies to WMV so ppt can use the movies, ...insert the wmv's into ppt on the PC, ...
Assume the City laptop has an older version of ppt so the movies (in wmv) are put into the same folder on the thumb drive, so the City's laptop will link the movies to the ppt presentation? Will the City's PC be able to link the two?
I'm a Mac guy, an architect. I've never looked at Bootcamp, nor at VMWware Fusion. I suppose you're recommending that I get those?
There are some free conversion sites online. I just converted an mov to a wmv using: http://www16.online-convert.com/init-video-conversion , ...unfortunately only the audio came through, in a much smaller file.
ZAMZAR is another conversion site. I tried them yesterday and I think the movie conversion worked, though the ppt work I tried, ...didn't. Must try again, using somebody's PC and ppt, as you say.
This is such an unnecessary trial, ...not to mention waste of time. Twenty hours or more, wasted due to an obsolete City policy. Such dummies down there.
I've used the Office for Mac Suite a bit, mostly Word to open documents sent by others, and was hoping 2011 would "export" to a useful file.
Only buy those if you have to do this often because you have to also invest in a copy of Windows 7 and Office. If you only do this once in a while, I would find a friend with a pc or use one in the library. Personally, I would get friendly with the City people so they'll just let you plug in your mac.
Never heard of Zamzar so I can't comment. Many people use the free MPEG Streamclip software and Flip for Mac (to be able to export as wmv) to convert mov to wmv. You might need to use a pay version of Flip for Mac but it's still a cheap $29.
If you keep the ppt file and movies together in one folder when you import them and move the entire folder to the other pc, they should remain linked. Good luck!
I'll hold off on purchases, there are plenty of pc's around, and plenty of windows.
We architects maintain friendly relations with "the City people," ...but, as in all mature bureaucracies, the system is paralized. Imagine, stuck on such a simple issue. Incredible.
Thank you for your help in any case.
