Kernel Panic when watching videos (and other random times)?

Hi all,

I've been having a lot of trouble with kernel panics and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction for fixing this. I'm aware of the Airport issue mentioned on these forums (and have tried the kext fix for that without any luck). I have KPs when watching 4+ minute long videos on Youtube (have no issue using iMovie for longer videos or watching videos from my own harddrive), sometimes when the screensaver is on or shortly after the computer goes unidle, and sometimes for no apparent reason. I've already had 2-3 KPs in the past 4 hours. This is my first Mac and not at all what I was expecting. 😟

Sometimes the screen will flicker rapidly, other times I will get a black screen, pink screen, or the screen will "glitch" and move halfway to the left (right is now on the left and left on the right). I can sometimes delay the crash if I pause the video (the screen starts to twitch or have "lightning" flashes across parts of it) but it will eventually crash anyway.

I usually use Firefox but have had the same crash in Safari so it's not browser-related as far as I can tell.

Things I have tried (none helped):

  • Rebooting in safe mode to scan and repair file directories
  • Resetting the PRAM
  • Deleting application preferences
  • Checked and repaired permissions
  • Checked and repaired hard drive
  • Calling tech support, which had me do all the above again and unselect the "put hard discs to sleep" option
  • Reinstalled Lion
  • Replaced the Kext for the Airport Driver (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3194446?answerId=15780717022#15780717022)

Things I can't do (currently) to fix this:

Connect directly to the Internet via an Ethernet cable (the Internet portal is wi-fi only).

I would be happy to downgrade (except if more stable it'd be more of a upgrade at this point 😉) to Snow Leopard if that is an option, but am not sure how to go about doing that (I don't have a disc for it). Happy to supply any further information needed... 🙂

The latest KP (I don't really understand how to read these yet to determine the cause of the crash) -

Update... uninstalled Parallels and restarted the system. Got through one video (approximately 5 minutes) that had crashed the system earlier, and about 1.5 minutes into another before it crashed and had to be shut down by hand. Restarted and it crashed again before it had even generated an error report. I shut down by hand again and restarted, and received this error report. Really frustrating. 😟 Since SyncMate shows up in both I'll try uninstalling that (haven't used it yet anyway).

Thanks - have only had one panic in the past 24 hours (just a bit ago). The screensaver was on with a chat program in the background, computer was idle about 45 minutes. Can't find any odd programs glancing through the report - thoughts on the cause of the crash?

Update... took it into the apple store shortly after my previous post (it continued to have daily problems). They could not replicate the issue in the store, nor could I replicate it when we set it up at the Genius Bar to test it. It came home doing the same thing, so they suggested to wipe the system completely and reinstall Lion since the partial reinstall had not worked. It seemed fine for about a month, and then began glitching again. I have not received a single notice of a kernel panic, but I don't really know what else to classify it as. I got a video clip of it after it started to glitch when scrolling -- this is about the 10th crash today (finally just gave up and booted up my PC laptop).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXPHVEu3qoM

Notes from video -

Have taken it to the Apple store for this, they could not replicate the issue. Suggested I wipe the system and start over. I did, and it was fine for about a month, then began again. Can't watch video or it crashes, often crashes even if I don't. This was after a "fresh" restart, started recording after some scrolling induced flickers.

Mouse (49% battery) and keyboard (28% battery). wifi connection through AT&T U-Verse. Cannot test a hard line connection. Crashes using Safari 5.1.7 or Firefox 13.0. Other programs running vary, but no consistency in crashes (most common is Trillian 1.3.37, but crashes even if that isn't open). 27" iMac running Mac OS X 10.7.4, (2.7 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB memory, AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB)

If there's any more information I can provide that would be helpful just let me know... I'd really like to be able to use my computer instead of having a giant expensive paperweight. :-\

Why not? It surely points to the wireless/WiFi stuff. I don't use any, but did the geniuses try wirelessly? If not, make another trip or find a friend with a wired connection and peripherals.

Jun 17, 2012 11:07 PM in response to baltwo

I didn't think there was a direct hook-up on the router -- found one and tested it, still crashed. Tried wired keyboard and mouse, still crashed.

The geniuses tried both wired and wireless connections without issue. I don't understand why it wouldn't crash in the store but will crash within 2 2-3 minute videos at home? We tested several videos in the store with no issue using wifi. Going to try having AT&T check the internet / routers in case that's the problem, before I haul it back to the Apple store again. Any other suggestions on stuff to try?

Good sleuthing so far. Sorry you've not resolved the problem. Do note that if you have AppleCare extended warranty and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you're eligible for onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine. BTW, if you don't, get it if you purchased the machine's less than a year ago.

Kernel Panic when watching videos (and other random times)?
