Intermittent Crashes-No Clues in Console

Or at least I can't find any clues other than repeated attempts to sign-in to a discontinued MobilMe account.

Any ideas?

The list of actions taken so far:

  1. Clean install and migrated user files from Time Machine back up.
  2. Installed OS10.6.8 over current OS
  3. Repair permissions from disk, zapped pram and reset smc.
  4. Ran Extended Apple Hardware Test, Drive Genius Scan Test, 6 loops of Rember (Memtest) - all passed
  5. Ran Onyx Maintanance and Clean.
  6. Searched and deleted old PPC and unused Intel applications and drivers
  7. Updated current apps and drivers.
  8. Removing all connected hardware except power and ethernet cable did not stop crash.
  9. One mistake was to delete Bonjour in Safari but I'm not sure what effect that may have had.
  10. What I've forgotten after a couple of weeks working on this problem😟

I have previously posted but I seem to have run into a dead end.

Here's the Console log ending with the launchd[1] entry which is the restart after a hard power off (?)

I googled mDNSResponder site:apple.com, perused the top results and chose the top hit: Mac OS X v10.6 Disabeling mDNSResponder wil disable DNS. I've entered the text in Terminal but how do you "Save" per step 4 of the instructions: (?)

Important: Follow these steps carefully. A malformed or problematic mDNSResponder.plist file may prevent your Mac from starting up. As a precaution, perform a full backup of your system with Time Machine.

  1. Make a back up copy of the mDNSResponder.plist file as a precaution.
  2. Open the mDNSResponder.plist file in Terminal using your preferred text editor. Here is a sample command:
    sudo nano "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist"
  3. Add "<string>-NoMulticastAdvertisements</string>" to the array in the "ProgramArguments" section.
    In other words:
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder</string>
    <string>-launchd</string>
    </array>
    becomes...
    <key>ProgramArguments</key>
    <array>
    <string>/usr/sbin/mDNSResponder</string>
    <string>-launchd</string>

    <string>-NoMulticastAdvertisements</string>

    </array>
  4. Save the file.
    Important
    : If you edited the file using emacs, you must remove the emacs backup file (the file with a tilde at the end of the name, "/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist~") or your Mac will not start up.
  5. Restart your Mac.

Thanks again, I'll save a copy of the Unix Terminal Commands.

I must have entered the command incorrectly because the MBP won't get past the spinning gear in normal, single user or safe mode. Starting from disk works but I can't enter Terminal commands to inspect the mDNSResponder.plist. I ran Disk Utility Repair Disk with no errors and am currently repairing permissions.

I have a Time Machine backup and a saved a copy of the original mDNSResponder.plist file on a flash drive. How do I get out of this pickle?

Mar 27, 2012 5:39 PM in response to baltwo

I was under the impressiom Xcode was for developers so I always left it unchecked during installations. But if it's the better way to go I'll install it after the Restore is completed.

I don't ues Bonjour either - that I know of - other than the Kodak printer driver asks for it and I deny it access. The curious problem is the old MobilMe account trying to phone home from what I can see in Console.

Thanks for your ideas, I learning. 😀

Mar 29, 2012 10:58 AM in response to baltwo

I had to zero out and reformat the Time Machine backup hard drive because Time Machine would not allow me to use it's backup file, i.e. the file was grayed out and not available to "Use For Backup" in Time Machine Preferences. TM is now running properly.

Now, I've opened Xcode and Command Line Tool, which prompted me to name and save a new project "Bonjour No Multicast Advertisements" in the Documents folder and it appears that I now have an active running process in Xcode with no way to delete it. I just wanted to get as far as I could with Xcode before asking how to run "<string>-NoMulticastAdvertisements</string>" per Apple Article Mac OS X v10.6: Disabling mDNSResonder will disable DNS.

What do I do now?

Mar 29, 2012 7:46 PM in response to baltwo

Yes, you did say to use the Property List Editor, my error.

I Property List Editor I added a field under ProgramArguments and entered "-NoMulticastAdvertisements". The com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist permissions currently reads:

user (Me) Read & Write

staff Read only

everyone Read only

Do I add System and wheel to the existing permissions or replace them?

Which permissions are given to System and wheel?

How do I use Terminal to replace the curent com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist file?

Thanks for your time, Roger
