Does anyone have a solution to the bug discussed here where mounted SMB shares cannot be searched using the Finder?
I installed a clean copy of Lion and cannot search any mounted SMB volume from a QNAP NAS or a Windows 7 share.
Does anyone know of a way to search these volumes quickly? What are your searching solutions? Thanks.
Apple PLEASE fix this bug. I don't want to have to go back to Snow Leopard.
I'm on lion with an SMB share mounted and i can search it perfectly fine via finder.
HOWEVER, my gut reaction when doing a search is to type in something like *.mp3 or something similar depending on what im searching for (music files, word docs, etc). finder does not seem to recognize the * as a wildcard. so changing my search from *.mp3 to simply .mp3 or even mp3 yielded the expected results.

This doesnt help at all. Can you show me a screenshot of a search on an SMB share? I have tried on three different macs with Lion and none work.

What operating system is serving the SMB shares?
Windows server 2008 R2
(also works on another share from a windows 7 pro machine)
Thats interesting, it doesn't work to a Windows 7 machine, but I shared from Server 2008 R2 and it search SOME of the folders in the share, but missed others. Very odd behavior.
I guess theres no real solution to this, except perhaps moving the share to Linux and using NFS perhaps?

(complete guesswork here) but maybe it requires write permission in order to do a search
I've never really checked into what exactly the .DS_Store file does. Maybe its used in the searching process and if the machine does not have permission to write the ds_store file to a shared folder it cant search?

No it's not permissions, as I have full write permissions to the share, and even have my iTunes library on it.
Simple solution is dump Spotlight and get Easy Find. It will search everything on any drive, local or networked.
I have about 50 mac users who have lost spotlight functionality on our sharepoints since we moved our servers over on to SMB drives.
I am considering GroupLogic's ExtremeZ-IP ($2500 for 50 users) as an enterprise fix on the server. Anyone have experience with it solving advanced searches, ie. document key words, as well as speeding up folder access speeds?
Spotlight on network shares needs OS X server on the share host. Even a full blown Mac Mini with OS X server on it will be less than $2500.
