Do desktop items take up ram?

I was at the apple store diagnosing something, and the lady told me that item's on my desktop take up ram. I have a couple folders with tons of videos in them on my desktop. My ram would surely be shot if they took up ram no?

Yes and no. Yes in that they do, in a technical sense, use memory when being displayed by most operating systems. No in the sense that removing them will have no impact on performance on an even remotely modern computer(unless you had hundreds of icons showing). The amount of memory used to draw the icon is minimal, the contents of the folder are not using memory.
