why can't we use bluetooth, on Iphone 4s, like on a normal phone?

I want to syncronize my phone to my calendar wireless like the old nokias do, sience this is a high tech device.

Why this limitations for bluetooth and wireless? What does Apple gain by this?

iPhone 4S, iOS 5.1

iCloud syncs fully wireless - contacts, calendars, tasks, bookmarks, email etc.

Syncing many megabytes or gigabytes of music, movies, podcasts, books and apps wirelessly would drain the battery. Doing so whilst plugged in to a power source doesn't.

Old Nokia's don't sync such huge amounts of media, but if that's what you prefer, sell the iPhone and buy an old Nokia.

Whether you like it or not, we are living in the Internet age. We have moved past the limits of Bluetooth syncing long ago. Nokia's own Windows Phone 7 based smartphones don't sync via Bluetooth either, neither will Android phones without additional third-party software.

Why restrict yourself to only being able to sync contacts or calendars when your phone is within a few metres of your powered up PC when you can easily, and automatically, sync from anywhere in the world (even without owning a PC)?

The iPhone is, and always has been, an Internet connected device. It's time to leave behind your old fashioned, slow, limited proximity syncing methods and embrace the 21st Century way of doing things.

So, the fact is: The iPhone doesn't offer Bluetooth syncing. If Bluetooth syncing is the highest priority feature of a phone for you, then the iPhone is not for you, and an "old Nokia" is about the only phone that will suit your needs.

I think Julian misses George's point. I have the same question.

Sure, it is fine to use WiFi, the internet, the cloud etc. if they are available.

But they aren't always available. All I want is to sync contacts and calendar appointments over bluetooth.

I travel a lot and sitting in a cafe somewhere in the middle of nowhere with no internet and the cable back at the hotel, I want to sync over Bluetooth. Simple, quick, and easy.

There isn't a lot of data in that scenario – sync'ing on my grungy old Sony-Ericsson only took 20 seconds. PLUS I have my mac set up to automatically connect and sync every 30 minutes. I don't even have to take any action – whenever, wherever I am, the phone is up to date.

Regardless of what your old phone enabled you to do, the iPhone does not, never has, and is unlikely ever to offer Bluetooth syncing of contacts and calendars. Posting here will not change that. If Apple thought syncing via Bluetooth was a worthwhile feature, no doubt they would've included it at some point in the last 5 years.

If the example situation you give is a common occurrence, why not just keep a cable with you in your laptop bag? The iPhone sync cable also doubles as a charging cable, and if you travel a lot, presumably, like me, you carry a cable so you can charge your phone "whenever, wherever" you are?

I am on Mikes side, i work at a instore photo proccesing lab & customers like to bluetooth to our order kiosks, fine if you have a Android phone or a old pre android phone but iPhone, itouch, ipad forget it you have to download a app then send your pic to our instore order manager, this takes at lweast 20 mins PROVIDING you get a signal. Also i have a gen2 itouch & my son has a gen4 itouch, bluetooth between them? dont make me laugh. Just think they used to complain that Microsoft had a monopoly.

Sience this topic was started by me because of lack of sync with outlook calendar via bluetooth I wanted to give you my thoughts on cable also.

I tried to sync outlook calendar via cable also and it seems it works 2 or 3 times and then it stops. From what I read on the internet this problem is not new and people have it for as long as the Iphone exists but nothing was done. Anyhow right now if I click repair periodically on the " Apple Mobile Device Support" from control panel it works again for 2 or 3times 🙂
