iPhone backup not working...

I have a iPhone 4 with latest iOS 5.1 and a MacBook running Mac OS X Lion and the latest iTunes 10.6.

The problem is that my iPhone will not backup to my MacBook via the standard USB cable or using WiFi.

It syncs music across etc etc but will not perform a backup or it just skips it. After 'sync' it comes up with the message 'iTunes coud not back up the iPhone "iPhone" because the iPhone disconnected.

Has anyone had this problem? Or is it just me?

And how do I sort it out?

In the Device tab in Preferences the last backup noted is from November 2011 which is a bit odd. There is about 5 iPhone backups all from 2011.

Delete the backups and try again.

It didn't work, via usb or over WiFi.

In the Backup on Summary page, it states "Last backed up to this computer: unknown".

Also stated error (-50) on first attempt.

Quit iTunes and restarted it without the iPhone connected.

Connected the iPhone and it and it performed a perfect backup. WOO!

I've deleted a backup of my old iPad and iTunes just freezes.

I thought I got it working, but after I performed a backup on my MacBook, it stopped working again. I've just started backing my phone up to iCloud. Works fine.

But what happens now, is every now and then my iPhone fails to sync over WiFi.
