Q: My iPad 3 says 3G but data stops working

I recently bought a new new iPad in Singapore and it does not work as I had hoped.

I take it to work and put it on my desk next to my iPhone.  They both say at least 1 bar of reception, they both say 3G.  Data works on both of them - web pages load fast, emails come, app store works. This is not WiFi, this is 3G cellular data.

I don't know the exact timings but an hour or so later, I turn the screen on on the iPad.  Still says at least 1 bar, still says 3G.  However no data works.  No websites, no app store, no emails,  I check my iPhone sitting next to it.  Data still works on that.

To make the iPad have data again, I have to turn it off (slide to turn off) and turn it on again.  Then data works for a bit.

I have to do this pretty much every time I have left my iPad for a while (30 mins plus?) and want to use it.

Singtel, the telecom provider have reset my line and also replaced the iPad's microsim card.  They say that that is all they can do.  However since there changes, the symptoms remain.

Apple have said that this is a telecoms problem, not an Apple problem.

I am a little disappointed and I hope this can be resolved.

Looks like a fix might have just been released by Apple.

    iOS 5.1.1.  :

This update contains improvements and bug fixes, including:

    - Improves reliability of using HDR option for photos taken using the Lock Screen shortcut

    - Addresses bugs that could prevent the new iPad from switching between 2G and 3G networks

    - Fixes bugs that affected AirPlay video playback in some circumstances

    - Improved reliability for syncing Safari bookmarks and Reading List

    - Fixes an issue where 'Unable to purchase' alert could be displayed after successful purchase

Done all my previous tests on T-Mobile since upgrading and no issues. It would appear that this update did fix the problem. An expensive mistake for Apple, if they'd only pushed the information out to everyone sooner, if only to say a update is imminent, they could have saved themselves a large number of replacements (including two to me!).

Still, glad it seems to be fixed for us now

This problem has been reported from nearly every country in which the new iPad is sold. It is quite frustrating that Apple have not takn the time to acknowledge the problem and offer a fix.

I have tried multiple ways around this, but invariably, the connection drops and I have to reboot the iPad. It seems to occur if switching from WiFi to 3G or when you pass between cellular transmitter areas. Whether or which, I had imagined that Apple Support communities would be exactly that - a forum in which support could be offered, rather than a forum through which we can all rant about our problems without Apple offering a resolution!

    Same problem here in India.

Updated to 5.1.1 yet have the problem. iPad only connects to Edge and 3G doesn't connect easily whatsoever. Tried resetting rebooting & just about everything. 3G comes on it's own  and goes back to edge tried the same sim card on the iPhone 4S and 3G works (tried in the same location). Why can't the iPad just have an enable 3G button under network?? Anyways will try to restore later on this week and will let you know. Hope this bug fixes!

Had 3G/Wifi switch problem before update 5.1.1 was released, but it somehowgot resolved itself about 2 weeks before 5.1.1 was announced. After updating, I've got the problem back and effects even harsher - now even rebooting ipad doesnt help, only sometimes occassional switch on/off of mobile data, but not everytime works. Sometimes just don't have 3G.

    *** is with this 5.1.1???

Same problem with me, sometimes 3G starts but mostly its just connected to Edge. Yes this was the problem on the earlier iOS (5.1) and on  5.1.1 lastest firmware

@ mazzda - just experienced the same problem after installing 5.1.1 on the Optus network in Australia. Everything was working perfectly before update.  I am using an ipad 1 - did a complete restore which did not help.  However, after checking the APN setting (dim recesses of my memory told me I had to change this once before) - changed it to correct setting and network data back up and running!

3G connection is fixed now. My carrier updated their system from 12.0 to 12.1 and now it works without applying the iOS 5.1.1 patch. I am in Peru with Claro internet service.
