data is a generic term for just about everything
mp3 is data so is a txt file...
In iTunes - assuming we are talking about music.
If the data file is in GarageBand, you can export the file to iTunes as an AAC or there may be an option to export as an MP3
this is a cd disc i put it in finder i cant see anywhere to convert the file thanks

You cant change a file on a CD/DVD.
You need to import the contents to iTunes. You can choose the file format to save it as in iTunes Preferences.
From the menu bar (with iTunes open)
iTunes > Preferences > General - click the Import Settings button and change the choice to mp3 encoder.
(Note - that instruction is for iTunes 9.1.1 - if it's changed in 10.x, I trust Klaus or one of the others will correct me).
When you've set the import encoding, put your CD in and select import (button at bottom right in 9.1, may be in the menu bar for 10.x).
If it's burned as a data disc, what are the file types?
Double-click the CD icon to open a window with them listed.

flac stands for free lossless audio codec. You can find more info about it at http://flac.sourceforge.net/
Also check out the http://flac.sourceforge.net/documentation_tasks.html#osx section for tips on conversion to other formats.
Sorry for the delayed reply - chores intervened.
Thanks R-C-R; saved me a bit of time there!
Forget iTunes, slieve, it won't import or convert them (unless there's been a change in 10.x)
You can play them directly in VLC (choose the first one on the list).
Or you can convert them with Audacity, though you may need some instruction with that.
