Inconsistent AirPlay audio output behaviour when receiving a phone call

Running latest iOS 5.1 on iPhone 4S.


If I am using AirPlay and a call comes in sometimes the music stops, sometimes it keeps playing in the background so I can hear both the caller and the music concurrently.



Other times, I lose the ability to select my AirPlay output - in the most recent case, the airplay icon disappeared but still kept playing audio to the AirPlay source (not the iPhone speaker) once the call ended.



Another time, I clicked on the AirPlay icon during a call and was given the option of "iPhone" or "iPhone Speaker" - see screenshot:
