No. The 4S is locked to Verizon. It can only be used on Verizon. IF you are a current customer in good standing, they can unlock the GSM side so that you can use the SIM slot when travelling outside of the US AND if there is no CDMA network present. If you do not maintain Verizon service, it becomes an iPod Touch. It can not be used as a phone at all.

As of 5.1, you can use the phone on GSM networks even if there is a CDMA network. They added the network switch to "improve the customer experience".
Wow, that was nice of them... Of course, maybe the mob at the gates with torches and pitchforks had an influence on them. ;-)
Thanks. That's the first I've heard that mentioned at all.
Just found out about it a couple of days ago myself. There did seem to be a few burn marks on the announcement.
No, it has to be a GSM unlocked iPhone. In order for your Straight Talk service to work, you would have to Jailbreak your iPhone if you use an AT&T based SIM from Straight Talk, or you could use a T-Mobile based SIM from Straight Talk and it would work fine. Straight Talk is an MVNO therefore when the AT&T based SIM is inserted, it defaults to the AT&T profile, and the Cellular Data Settings option does NOT show up. You have to use a T-Mobile based SIM because they have no default profile for the iPhone because they do not carry the device.
What can I do to use Iphone for as an Ipod touch>?? it keeps telling me to activate it
So in other words if the phone is unlocked by AT&T, I need to buy a T-Mobile sim card instead of the micro sim for AT&T in order forr the phone to work on Straight Talk? 😕
Nope. That won't work any more. T-Mobile is a supported carrier now. You won't get the APN settings option with a T-Mobile SIM in in. Fact is, there is no US SIM you can use in it that will give you the APN settings options.
Ask StraightTalk for help or buy a StraightTalk CDMA phone if you really want to use them.
I already have a cell phone that I bought from Wal-Mart (an Android) and am a current customer of Straight Talk. I guess I should just call them and see what the story is on iPhones.
