I'm using the contemporary template and while the terms that I've included in the glossary appear in bold, I'd really like them to appear with a colored background, as if they were highlighted. I couldn't find a setting to update the formatting of glossary terms. Can anyone help?

You can just highlight the glossary term and apply any character style you like to it. (In my book, all glossary terms are in italics.)

Thank you Michi. Just to clarify, do you change each glossary term manually or is there a place to change it such that it updates the template so all the terms, and the new ones not yet in place, are changed to the new format?

Template/styles are modifiable. Hyperlink is one of the styles.
• In your document select a word of text, any (glossary in this example) word will do.
• Style it the way you want your hyperlinks to look.
• Show Styles Drawer from the View menu.
• Find the Hyperlink style in the drawer and right-click on it.
• Select - Redefine Style from Selection - in the pop-up menu.
I based my book on the "Editorial" template. That template, when you add a glossary entry to the text, applies the "Glossary secondary definition" style to the link into the glossary. You can change the appearance of all glossary terms in the body of the book by redefining that style.
