time machine backup
Is there a way of backing up an iPad to Time Machine, just as I am accustomed to backing up my OS X systems?
I do not want to use iCloud or iTunes for backup.
iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), MBP8,3/10.7.3; iPhone4;Macmini/10.5

I do not believe so. But can I ask why you do not want to use iCloud to back up your iPad? It's really simple, it just backs it up whenever it's plugged in.
HuskieN, To answer your question: I do not want to use iCloud because:
1) If I decide to purchase an iPad, I do not want it to be automatically "sync"ed with all my email and music from my laptop and desktop. I already have a desktop and a laptop and and I am sick of having to redundantly sift through all email on all my machines.
2) My musical tastes are classical and selective, and iTunes' offerings are not of interest.
3) I have yet to purchase an iPhone App. My iPhone is already cluttered with default App icons that I rarely use.
4) iCloud does not support Snow Leopard and I have one Mac (that may be able to run Lion but) that absolutely must be reliable - and I simply cannot risk upgrading, given Lion's current unreliability.
5) Lion is buggy and occasionally freezes on my "new" MacBookPro8,3.
6) Lion never did work properly on my MacBookPro 6,2.
7) the Apple Discussions thread for "Lion hard freezes at login" has complaints from suffering users of other Mac models, around the globe, who are looking for solutions to (other) Lion problems for their "officially certified for Lion" platforms.
8) For months, Apple has remained silent on these issues and appears to still be searching for a solution.
I guess the bottom line is that I no longer trust Apple (or any other "cloud storage" scheme) with my stuff. I would rather "Do It Myself".

HuskieN: A bit more searching led me to this TS bulletin. So it looks as if, with Lion (but not Snow Leopard?), the iTunes' IOS backup is actually backing up stuff to a /Library ... folder on the Mac that is running the backup using iTunes. And, subsequently, when I do a Time Machine backup, I just need to ensure that that backup-folder gets included in the TS backup process. So it iwould not be the case that all "my stuff" is actually stored in my iCloud account's quota of server-storage.
Max Likely: RE. point 2 (above), I'll retract my comment about iTunes not having Classical Music offerings of interest. I've just done another round of searching for my vavourite artists (Horozitz, Pollini, Brendel, Askenazy, et al.) and composers (Beethoven, Chopin, Satie, Bach, et al.) and found a good selection of "hits". 😊
So I am quite likely to become A. F. Customer. 😊
I can't say that I have a Mac (yet) to know about most things Mac, but I assume you could do it that way, yes.
