I know this is an old post but I had a very similar problem and I thought I'd post the solution I found for anyone else who may benefit from it.
My Problem was:
My iMac couldn't find my keyboard (after a restart) even though it was working earlier in the same day. Changing batteries did not help.
Solution for my case:
Unplugged the Apple TV since I discovered it was picking up the keyboard signal and trying to pair with it. Popular keyboard, eh?

If you have a power cut or turn off your Mac and have Bluetooth turned on in your iPad, you will have the same problem. Go into settings on your iPad and turn off Bluetooth and your keyboard will come back. It took hours to work this one out! This is with Lion. Hopefully they have sorted this bug by now in Mavericks.
