Q: Connecting a Brother MFC-665CW

I cannot get my iMac to recognize the drivers for my Brother MFC-665CW!  I followed the instructions on the Brother website explicitly (CUPS driver) and still cannot get my OS X 7 iMac to recognize the Brother!  Any tips?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8), 2.16 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo

What is OS X 7? Your profile indicates you are using 10.6.8 so I'm going to guess that is what you're running.

First thing is do not use the drivers you got from Brother directly. If the printer is connected via USB turn off the printer and disconnect the USB cable. Then in the Print & Fax system preference highlight the printer on the left pane and click the - symbol at the bottom of the box. Next restart the computer in Safe Mode (hold down the Shift key on startup until you see a progress bar appear) , let it fully boot and then reboot normally. Next connect the USB cable and then turn on the printer. OS X should see the device. If it does not go into Print & Fax preference and click the + symbol and add the printer again using the drivers OS X provides. You can also follow:

I just recently updated to Lion.  My profile still says Snow Leopard, I think.  I will update it.  I am running 10.7.3

The iMac does recognize the printer when I connect it as described by rkaufmann87 above.  But after it installs, it says,"software not available at this time. Try adding it later via Software Update."

Brother says that their driver IS compatible with Lion.  The only thing that I haven't tried is starting the computer in safe-mode.  At this point I will try anything.  I will let you know.

Pleae follow my directions in my original post, if the system does not find your device then continue following directions and run Software Update, it is located under the Apple symbol in the upper left of your screen. Follow ALL the on-screen directions and it should install just fine.

Evidently the key was the "safe mode" boot and then the reboot.  When I re-plugged the printer, it automatically appeared in the printer window.  All is good now!  Thanks!
