Multiple "iphone has been detected but could not be identified" Popups

I am experiencing this too. I am not sure if it started when I began using a new iPad in addition to my existing iPhone, but I don't think this is coincidental. I also sometimes get another error which seems to be due to iTunes trying to wirelessly sync to a device even though it hasn't been connected to power.

Win 7

iTunes 10.6.0.40

iPad "3" up-to-date firmware

iPhone 4S up-to-date firmware

both devices set for wireless sync, and both get docked to USB cables for recharge at night, but not connected directly to PC.

I have the exact same setup/devices as Blackthorne, except my iPad is the new iPad.

These popups are definitely annoying. The problem is, when I search for the error I get a lot of results from years ago that had to do with plugging the phone to the PC to sync. I do wifi sync for everything now.

I can attest to "hundreds" of popus. It sounds ridiculous (and it is) but it's the absolute truth. I just recently cleared my hard drive and reinstalled everything, for other reasons, but this keeps happening. I'd have to say it got much worse when I got my new iPad. It might have something to do with multiple devices?

I was hoping a problem this bad was going to be fixed in this latest iTunes updates, but no such luck. Somebody please fix this!

The other error I have received for a while (as mentioned in my previous response above) is 'iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred (0xE800007F)' - and I get this when I am not connected to the iPhone, but it appears to be trying to Wirelessly sync even when not on charge. This error has popped up for a while, but it doesn't pop up nearly as many messages as the primary topic of this thread. I don't know if it is relevent or related, just mentioning it in case. But this newer '...could not be identified' message is crazy in how many popup messages are created overnight...

There are two things I was hoping Apple has tested, and maybe others have as well:

1. I password protect my iPhone. Could this happen as the phone locks or if password is required?

2. If computer goes to screen saver with password requrired, does that affect this error?

BTW, I have opened the firewall ports, and can get Wi-Fi Sync to work when I test. To test I used the iTunes Wi-Fi Sync form General settings on the iPhone and use Sync Now. This finishes just fine (unless I get a warning about not enough space...should have ponied up the extra $ for bigger iPhone!).

I thought this info may help other and/or Apple to diagnose this error.

Apple needs an article like TS2818 that addresses Wi-Fi instead of USB!

Same problem, 2 3gs, 1 touch 4, ipad 2. Neverending poppups.

My iDevices are not password protected (I should really do that, but that's another discussion). My Win 7 PC is set to never sleep or go to screen saver.

My girlfriend has her 4S synced to her laptop (only the 1 device) and she only gets one popup at a time. I wonder if it has something to do with having more than 1 device per iTunes. Not that 1 popup all the time is acceptable, but it's certainly more manageable than what we are all experiencing in this thread.

Possibly, although I can see multiple devices working properly at the same time. It can be any of the devices. I've seen the popup on the touch, ipad, and one or both of the iphones. I wonder if it's related to the devices never ejec ting properly. Like when you grab it off the charger and start using it. Supposedly it's only supposed to synch when it's on the charger?

You might be on to something there. I've witnessed it going a couple days without the popups. Maybe it's that one time every now and then where I plug it in and then unplug it shortly after.

It doesn't sync as long as there are popups to be closed. I haven't paid attention enough, but I think if I sync it manually after closing the popups then it'll start syncing at night again. I'll play with it a bit this week and see if I notice any patterns that fit your hypothesis.

No one from Apple support respond to this yet? It is driving me CRAZY! I have grown to HATE iTunes! I have an iPad, Ipod Touch and iPhone 4S. It's constant with all of them!

Same here. Hundreds and hundreds of alerts. I can spend 5 minutes clicking okay before I can finally use iTunes. I usually end up forcefully ending the program to avoid the hellish stream of messages.

I'm getting it too. I've found that just holding down the enter key is the fastest way to get rid of them.

I'd prefer not to get them at all! My problem is I plug my iPhone in at night, and on my way out the door in the morning, I expect it to have synchronized and be ready to eject. Instead, I have to sit there and click through all these messages and THEN wait for it to finish syncing! I really, REALLY hate iTunes now! Great job, Apple!

I use a media laptop connected to my home theater to sync and manage iTunes so I don't check on it every day. I have this problem and you can imagine how many of these popups to deal with any time I check in with it!!

The tip for holding down "enter" from Mr_Penguin is way better than clicking, thanks.

Apple needs to fix the actual issue though!

Waiting on revision to come out. I wish apple would embrace the fact that many of their users manage all the family Apple products on a central system!
