Preview: very small image with Mail PDF

Problem just surfaced a week ago with Snow Leopard after years of no issue; even upgrading to Lion problem persists. An image will scan properly and/or a PDF attachment shows correct size but when using the "Mail PDF" command in Print, the text becomes too small to read in Mail.

Scanning with a Brother MFC unit; Brother did troubleshooting with me, and it appears to be an Apple software issue. I've changed settings in Preview but nothing improves.

Adobe Reader results in the correct size of the image.

The only change made with my Mac Mini was increasing memory to 8GB.

Is the pdf embedded in the mail message and is that where the printing looks small? If so I would think it scales up as yo make the mail window bigger. If it is correct size in Adobe Reader then I also think the image would scale up if you made it's window larger too or set its PDF preferences to use a 100% scale and/or "1 point equals 1 screen pixel".

I am not sure then what scales it down when you stick it in a mail message (maybe it is saled to the mail message window size you are currently using). But if you compress the pdf, for example as a .zip file, and add that to the email message, then the receiver will get exactly what you sent after they expand the compressed enclosure.

You can easily compress to zip files by right (control) clicking the pdf in the finder to bring up its contextual menu and then selecting Compress. The zip will be created in the same folder as the pdf and then you can drag the zip into the mail message.

I cannot duplicate your problem.

If I open a PDF, then choose File > Mail Selected PDF Document, the PDF is inserted in an e-mail message without any change, and it's as expected.

If I open a PDF, then choose File > Print > PDF > Mail PDF, again I obtain the expected results.

(I assume you are aware that the two commands I mentioned are not the same. The former sends the PDF to be mailed as it is, while the latter renders it through Quartz, re-creating the PDF.)

Can you provide additional details?

When I say, "Can you provide additional details?", I mean additional details of which you are in charge.

For instance, what has Brother got to do with all this? Do you mean to say that, (a) you scan a document with a Brother multi-function device, (b) save the scanned image as a PDF file, (c) open it with Preview, etc? What is your e-mail client? What is your default e-mail message format? And so on. I cannot guess these things, and I cannot help you if I cannot reproduce your problem—the only thing I can do is compare settings and see if any that might affect the issue are different.

Sorry, I misunderstood. Scanning with Brother Mfc-8890DW printer (have had for 3yrs). Scanned both to image ( image scans fine but reduces when sent to Mail PDF thru Preview) & also scanned direct to email (apple Mail). I thought this might have been related to the Brother software, but reinstalled the Twain driver & printer driver & there was no change. I'm OK with using Adobe but puzzled about this unexpected issue.

I don't quite follow. Did you save the scanned image as a file, and then opened it in Preview? Did you use Preview or Image Capture to scan, and then saved from Preview? Did you use Brother's scanning software, if any?

scanned direct to email (apple Mail).

How?

puzzled about this unexpected issue.

Isolate the issue. Get a PDF from a different source, open it in Preview, use both Mail… methods—same problem? Get a JPEG from a different source, and so on. So far, it's not at all clear to me if the problem lies with files saved by the scanning software, or with Preview, or with Mail.
