why won't my mvi avi files play on my macbookpro?

my video files appear to have 00:00 but I know they're video files. can't get them to play. how do i convert them?

have you tried downloading VLC?

Plays most codecs with no codec packs needed:

MPEG-2, H.264, DivX, MPEG-4, WebM, WMV player

i did download it. the files i uploaded now all show 10 seconds but there is no movement when i click play. they're just like still photos.

select one of the avis files in the Finder and select the menu item "File > Get Info":

What is the codec listed in the "More Info" section? Here is a screenshot of a movie from my Canon T1i:

If this codec is not one of the codecs listed for VLC then you will need to get that codec.
