itunes stops working for windows 7 64bit

Hello,

As the title says, I am using Windows 7 Professional x64 on my home computer. I am trying to run itunes but it always says "iTunes has stopped working". if necessary, i will upload a screenshot of it but that's all the information I get.

it occurs when:

  • exporting music to my ipod classic
  • adding music in the "automatically add to itunes" folder
  • adding music by drag and drop
  • every 30 seconds (without doing anything) - this number is an approximate, it may be less

I have tried the following things:

  • uninstalling and reinstalling
  • uninstalling and emptying my music folder, then reinstalling
  • clean uninstall (using a tool such as iobit uninstaller with Advanced System Care), then reinstalling
  • tried downloading again, in case the download corrupted the first time
  • looking up some registry stuff

my sound drivers work, so do other players like VLC and codecs like media player classic's codecs. i can confirm that itunes was one of the first programs to be installed on my computer so the codecs do not effect it. i am also running a server on here through my WLAN to my PS3 and all the music is playing on there. Consequently, I do not think there should be anything wrong with the codecs/drivers themselves.

i can't think of anything else to do, i am resorting to using my little netbook; which i'm trying to get rid of and import all my songs from, hence this being quite a predicament to be in.

This is a brand new computer and a brand new install, built it myself, so there shouldn't be any issues with the OS and i do not think it's wise if i reinstalled because i've already filled up about 2.5TB of stuff. It's going to take too much effort to transfer everything.

As a result, my biggest question is whether it can be fixed. if not, i will just wait till the end of the year when i purchase a macbook air. Of course, i do not want this outcome but if i have to then i'll settle with it.

As with all forum posts i send, my appreciation will go out to anyone who can help in this matter.

kind regards

hello. thank you for your help. unfortunately i tried everything and it's not doing the job. i restarted a few times too. i foolishly even tried to use a 32 bit version but it refuses it, for good reason. i even removed all of quicktime's stuff but now it doesn't even load, just says "iTunes stopped working" from the start

once again thank you for your help, if you do have any alternative suggestions though, they would be appreciated incredibly.

Try following steps and test one at a time:

1. Restart computer, right mouse click iTunes icon and select "Run As Administrator"

2. If that does not work, check to see if this file APSDaemon.exe is the problem here.

Close your iTunes.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Del key and choose Task Manager. In the "Processes" Tab, select the file APSDaemon.exe and click End Prosses button, then close the task manager window.

Now open itunes and see if it is working?

If that works, to prevent having to do the same process everytime you restart Windows, go to. START button, type in

MSCONFIG

Hit ENTER

Click STARTUP Tab, Uncheck "Apple Push", click OK.

Restart Windows.

3. If that fails or you don't see ApsDaemon.exe in the Processes, refer to following article to remove SC files:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2363

4. If that fails, repair or reinstall your Quicktime. START / CONTROL PANEL / PROGRAMS N FEATURES / hightlight QUICKTIME and click REPAIR.

Unforunately those attempts have proved to be unsuccesful. here is more detail in the nearest order to your post as possible:

  1. run as admin became almost the default thing i done because i never trusted normal booting of iTunes after it stopped working
  2. APSDaemon.exe is not running, but i don't have any recollection of it running in the first place, i may be wrong though
  3. MsConfig has been configured to disable anything that starts up, unless they are windows processes.
  4. Article shows that SC Info is empty, and i think it always has been - could that be why it is not coming up?
  5. i uninstalled quicktime completely (with iobit uninstaller to remove all traces of it) two nights ago so it won't be an interference, and to be honest i don't use it much.

Sorry if this is bothering you that these attempts are not working, i would most certainly not want this situation to have arisen.

hello wiclee,

i've installed it as admin and here are my results:

  1. quicktime works fine definitely
  2. although iTunes is still crashing, it has slowed down the time it takes to crash by ~2 seconds.

it did however pop up to say that there was an ipod service that wasn't installed correctly and prompted me to install it. which i did, then after that it loaded iTunes and subsequently crashed again.

Guess you have to do Uninstall and Re-install of iTunes from scratch.

Try the following steps:

1. Go to Microsoft website to fix install and Unistall problems. Click "Run now" from Fix it to remove all iTunes & related installer files:

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall

Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over.

2. You should remove all instances of iTunes and the rest of the components listed below:

it may be necessary to remove all traces of iTunes, QuickTime, and related software components from your computer before reinstalling iTunes.

Use the Control Panel to uninstall iTunes and related software components in the following order:

iTunes

  1. QuickTime
  2. Apple Software Update
  3. Apple Mobile Device Support
  4. Bonjour
  5. Apple Application Support (iTunes 9 or later)

Follow the instructions from Apple article listed here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 to remove all components

3. Reboot your computer. Next, download iTunes from here:http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and install from scratch

wow. thanks! trying that now, gonna reboot after this post:

done everything up to ensuring the associated files were deleted. found a few issues with:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\"

but managed to end udb.exe to make it delete completely.

i did notice the odd quicktime folder lying around but now have removed everything. see you on the other side...

i really hate to provide anyone with bad news, but after 2 reboots and an iTunes installation i get nothing at all now.

i have tried opening iTunes in admin as well as normal and get nothing visually.

task manager is politlely telling me that it runs to 11,200K then disappears. 😟

really thought that would be the trick that'd fix it.

oh yes, forgot to mention, is safari out of the equation? as it is not in the link you provided.

Apr 25, 2012 6:32 PM in response to ehab563UTD

Sorry that didnot work. Safari is not related to iTunes installation.

May be we should look at your Windows system just in case?

1. Have you done all the important windows updates and service Packs on your system. If not do it now.

2. Let's check your Windows system files for possible file corruption

SCAN and repair possible Windows system file corruption:

Go to command prompt (START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES right mouse click "command prompt" and choose "Run as Administrator"

type in

sfc /scannow

let Windows fix any system files that need to be repaired.

Restart the computer if it did actually repair any files.

3. Check your system for possible Malware. But you have to do it in WIndows Safe Mode.

Start your computer in "Safe mode with networking", go to this link download a free version of Malwarebyte.

http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free

Install and perform update immediately, then do a full SCAN. Remove malware if it indeed finds any. Restart computer to regular windows to let Malwarebyte complete the removal.

To start your computer in safe mode

Press and hold the F8 key as your computer starts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.

On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the "safe mode with networking" option, and then press Enter. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.

When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of your screen. To exit safe mode, restart your computer and let Windows start normally.

i've previously done all but the second step so here's what i got from it:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601]

Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.

Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

C:\Windows\system32>

hope that helps. i'll reboot now but that message is porbably telling me i don't need to.
