Help removing codec m

Hi, I mistakenly downloaded codec m using Google Chrome a few days ago, and have only just realised it's malware. I've removed all its associated folders in Library, but it won't let me delete it from my Trash.

Every time I try to empty it, this comes up: "The operation can’t be completed because the item “Cache.db” is in use." and "The operation can’t be completed because the item “codecm_uploader” is in use."

Please help? So far I haven't noticed any changes to my mac, but will it have any unwanted effects?

Thanks!

Have you logged out and back in to see if you could empty the trash?

And if that doesn't work try rebooting.

And if that doesn't work try Trash It!.

I downloaded from this from a site that indicated it was needed for bittorrent. It downloaded as "download.dmg". When I opened the disc image it had two files--one an install file, the other an uninstall file. I decided to do a search before installing and decided this must be malware. I deleted both files successfully from the trash without opening either one. I clicked on "show in finder" in downloads to delete the download and got the message:

"Safari can’t show the file “download.dmg” in the Finder because “download.dmg” has moved since you downloaded it." I did a search and have not been able to find it anywhere, but it still shows in the download box in safari. Not sure if it's really not there or hiding somewhere.

Anyone know if this still a problem? Thanks for any information.

When you say "this" are you referring to TrashIt!? I don't know what you followed but it certainly isn't downloaded through a bittorrent (never use bittorrents). And it downloads as a a zip file not a dmg. And there is no installer/uninstaller. So for all I know you did indeed download malware.

Here's the macupdate.com download page for TrashIt! instead of using TrashIt!'s own site. You can't possibly go wrong figuring out how to download from there.

By "this" I meant codec m folder. I thought I was downloading "XIII-the series". It was from piratebay, which I guess is not a good site. It directed me to another page with the link "download" and that downloaded and image file "download.dmg". When I opened that I saw the files to install, uninstall codec m. I trashed those two files, but cannot find the downloaded folder "download.dmg" and the dmg file therein. I get the message that it has moved since downloaded.

Safari's Downloads window is basically a list of past and current downloads. All items you've downloaded with Safari will be listed, regardless of what happened to them after downloading. If you download a file, and then delete it, its entry in the list will not be automatically deleted; and Safari will give you that message because it doesn't know what happened to the file—all Safari knows is that the file is no longer where it was downloaded.

You can configure the behaviour of the list in Safari > Preferences > General > Remove download list items, but it's not possible to make it automatically remove items which have been deleted in Finder.

No problem.

I have removed files from:

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.codecm.uploader.plist
~/Library/Application\ Support/Codec-M/
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Extensions/codec-M.safariextension
~/Library/Caches/com.whitesmoke.Codec-M
~/Library/Safari/Extensions/codec-M.safariextz

There was also a folder ~/Library/Caches/com.codec-m

And I removed the "codec-m" application from the Application folder,

and the complete Google Chrome application before I ever ran Chrome.

I even erased Firefox with "secure empty trash" and reinstalled it, but it is still in my Firefox extensions list.

I would REALLY like to get rid of this thing. Any suggestions on how to remove it completely?
