Seagate 3TB HDD

Regarding a 3,5" HDD for an iMac, 27", 3,06 GHz Processor, EMC Number 2309. It was shiped with a 1TB SEAGATE Barracuda 7200 RPM drive. I would like to ask if the following HDD 3.0TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SATA 64MB Cache 6Gb/s HDD would fit into my iMac.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), EMC 2309

Yes. If you look at the physical size specs, I think you'll find they are the same. Your late 2009 model "should" be outside the current system issue that replacement drives not delivered thru Apple cause fan and AHT issues.

Hi Greg,

Thank you for your reply. I did buy a 3TB Seagate HDD and it has a thermal sensor (4 pins) that fits with the cable from the iMac. The exchange operation will be performed in the next few days. I still don't know what I am going to to with all that space - with all the data I have, I only require about 600 GB. The price of the HDD was 175 Euros in Austria, which compares well the the price that OWC demand.

I will send you a note once everything is working.

Kind regards.

Hi,

no, the 3TB HDD did not work. The iMac did not recognise the 3 TB HDD - if I remember correctly (it was a long time ago!) the iMac only recognised 640 GB. I exchanged it for a 2 TB Seagate HDD with thermal pins. BUT - that's Apple for you - it did not have the Apple firmware. So the iMac booted, worked well - for about 10 minutes and then the HDD fan went on full blast, obviously creating a lot of noise. The only work-around solution was HDD Fan Control Version 2.4 - downloaded from http://www.hddfancontrol.com. After installation, the iMac ran smoothly without noise pollution.

Since then I have changed to another iMac with a SSD (250 GB) and a HDD (2 TB), 16 GB RAM. The machine is so wonderfully fast that I am not even interested in looking at the newer iMacs, which would be so expensive in comparison with the iMac that I have.

I hope it helped. Nice hearing from you after such a long time.

Kind regards.

PS I hope Apple will not censor this posting.
