Q: My cursor is going bananas.

It has a mind of it's own, it moves by itself, it clicks by itself, and it doesn't matter if I use the trackpad or a usb mouse. Any thoughts? Thanks.

    Hiya,

I just wanted to give my update. After reading all the posts, I decided it would be easy enough for me to shut down my macbook at night instead of putting it in sleep mode. During the week I'm only on my computer in the late evenings, so this means it's shut off for most of the day.

And ... I've had no trackpad problems! <knocks on wood> So whether it's static electricity, a heating issue, or my cat's fat fuzzy bum, hopefully I found my fix.

I'm also putting my macbook away when I'm not using it so my cat can't sit on it, so I guess really I made two changes. Oh, and it's unplugged while it's away, so there's a third change. Multi-variable hypothesis!

Thanks to everyone for your experiments and suggestions. I found them all helpful and a few entertaining.

I'm having the same problems originally posted. Mouse is all over the screen on my MacBook Pro (2010 model). I tried reseting PRAM and also the outlet, without success. The only thing that seems to be stopping this erratic behavior is unplugging the laptop from the wifi. As long as it's diconnected, it doesn't jump around opening files and windows.

Anyone had found that to be permanent solutions?

    Thanks!

My MACBook Pro is still working fine.  I keep the original charger plugged directly into a receptacle that has proven to give me no problems.  The only other thing that I've been doing slightly differently from my previous Powerbook is to unplug the laptop when it reaches 100% charged.  I used to keep them plugged in most of the itime. This may be helpiing to avoid the problem but there is no way to tell.  I've never had mine plugged into the wifi, always connect to the internet wirelessly.  Good luck with your troubleshooting.  Hope the problem is solved soon.

Update: I ended up at the Genius bar, they tested the trackpad, and even when it passed the test, there were a few spots that didn't work properly so I had it replaced. After $90, and two days of using the laptop, I haven't had any more problems!

I've got this issue intermittently. Most of the time the cursor is fine, but once and a while it wlll start moving around wildly. I have a tiny bit of control over it, but it's too erratic to actually do anything. I brought it into an Apple store a few months ago, and they replaced the trackpad (or what's under the trackpad? Not sure...), and that seemed to fix it, but now the issue's popping up again.

I bought the Macbook in the U.S. but am now in Australia--anyone know if the warranty will still be honored? I've got Applecare still active.

I'm using the original power cable. The issue definitely happens when plugged in to A/C power. I've tried zapping PRAM and SMC.
