where is my disk space going
i cant seem to account for almost 40 gigs of my disk space. i have added up all of my programs and files ect... any ideas?

Try OmniDiskSweeper to determine the size and nature of files.

A stuck email that keeps trying to send can eat so many GB so fast you won't believe it. There is a thread on how to get that email unstuck. Don't know if that could be your issue.
A couple of things, one is virtual memory as the Mac portables saves the RAM contents on sleep, although that should only be 4GB. The other often overlooked files are iPhone/iPad backups, as they contains all the data files which can grow to a surprising amount.
My preference is to use Daisy Disk as it gives a graphical representation of the state of your hard drive.

I found that when I got my MacBook Pro the system took 2 copies of the RAM automatically for the sleep file used if the system loses power. On a 256GB machine I was certainly concerned about the system using 32GB of it essentially unnecessarily. You can google how to change your hibernate mode in order to avoid this.
