Be sure to sync with iTunes so everything will be backed up. Then when the device is restored you restore everything from your backup.

Thanks. I just synced my phone to iTunes. How do I restore it from this?
During upgrade everything on the iPhone is deleted. Then the new software is installed after which you will be asked if you wish to restore as a new phone or restore from your backup.

Yes, provided the old apps are compatible with the new OS. BTW, double-check before in the Apps section of the iTunes library to be sure all your apps are listed there just in case. I usually sync twice just to be certain there is a backup.
I also maintain backups of the computer just in case. You should have a current backup.
