Why will minecraft not working on new iMac?

I just upgraded from on old iMac. Dealing with unhappy kids becuase the minecraft game they loved won't work on the new one.

I've installed Java for Lion. I go to the minecraft site and try a single player game. We get application errors.

I suppose its an older game that is not compatible with Lion, right?

I see I can purchase a download for 20 euros. Should that work?

Thanks for any advice.

You will need to go to their site and troubleshoot and see if it is compatable with Lion.

Good Luck

I just tried to play using the browser and get a white window. Minecraft works perfectly using the launcher though, so it must be a problem with the web applet plug-in - I suggest trying the launcher.

Check you have Java installed correctly. You should have Java SE 6 64-bit and 32-bit listed under the Java Preferences which can be found in Applications > Utilities. Also search (include system files) for .minecraft and open the enclosed 'bin' folder and delete minecraft.jar, then launch and force update.

Thanks Dick, it helps knowing that it should be possible. I was about to give up.

The launcher is the download you need to buy for 20 euros right? Did you buy just to help me?

I think my kids were using the free classic version on our old iMac. They are not so happy with me right now for upgrading:)

But I think what you are saying is that the while the browser version doesn't seem to work, if I pay for the download it should work, right?

btw, thanks, I checked the Java preferences and everything looks right - which is reassuring.

It's working for me on a MacBook Pro (Early 2008) with a freshly installed 10.7.3. I can't guarantee it will work, but theoretically it should as it does for me. I spent three hours on a friend's Toshiba notebook (Windows 7) trying to make it work, which it did, after finding that Toshiba install the wrong graphics drivers in the factory on his specific model, which needed removing.

I must say that it's been worth every penny - my kids have been playing Minecraft for over a year now. Don't forget that with the paid version they can use the multiplayer capability and access hundreds of servers. My kids use client mods which are easy to install, such as Too Many Items, Mine Little Pony and Rei's Mini Map. You can also use HD texture packs such as Misa's 64x with mcpatcher. I'm off to paste in a full size USS Enterprise into one of my kid's world's now! Good Luck.
