Cannot be played in HD on this computer?

Hello, I have a fairly new computer, and I have played HD from itunes on here before. Why am I getting this message when I try to rent a movie in HD??

"cannot be played in HD on this computer

You must rent and watch the HD version on an HD-compatible device. Or you can rent the SD version and watch it on this computer"

Can anyone help me out??

And, if you do not have the luxury of owning a MacBook Pro retina display, just quietly making your way on, say, a 2016 Dell XPS 15 9550 "infinity" display, running windows 10, and you've already ticked the "Download full-size HD videos" button but are still getting the error popup (like me)-- follow Jesse's steps.

But the two buttons can both be selected! I was getting the error despite having the "Download full-size HD videos" button ticked. As soon as I unticked the "Download high-quality SD videos" -- the problem went away!

Thanks, Carbonio. My Macbook Pro Retina was already set to 1080p, but I'll downgrade to 720p and see if this makes any difference.

Definitely an iTunes bug - your Macbook Pro Retina should be able to cope with several 720p movies playing simultaneously, so to say it cannot be played is nonesense. I didn't have this problem until I upgraded to iTunes 11.

Hey the Monster... I think now the problem can be fixed...

So try:

1- close all your apps

2- go to the Apple icon and click on "shut down"

3- Hold "shift" + "control" + "option" and after just give one click on the power button, but do not hold the button.

Note that nothing it's going to happen... so after a few seconds go to the power button and switch on your Macbook Pro again.

And try to download a movie at Itunes Store.

I really hope that does it help you buddy!

Peace!

It worked for me by going to System Preferences, Display, and changing from "Best for Retina Display" to "Scaled" then moving the slider all of the way to the right (more space). Evidently, the native resolution for Best for Retina Display is not truly HD, but it can be adjusted to an HD standard.

This way I can download in 1080p and watch on the new macbook pro with retina display.
