iphone 4s won't save photos

My iPhone 4S won't save photos taken with it, or sent to it. The phone is only a little more than a week old, and as far as I can tell, has never been able to save a photo, I only just noticed the other day because I was busy learning the other bells and whistles.

I can use the camera feature to take a photo and immediately send it as a text, but I cannot save any photos taken. It pretends like it saves them, and then they disappear.

I've googled around, and most places lay out a plan that involves creating a back-up, doing a hard reset, and then restoring the phone. However, each of these make a point that when I'm restoring the phone I should not "set up a new phone" and I should not "restore with the backup" I've created, but as far as I can tell, these are my only two options.

None of the articles about this that I've found have mentioned the iphone 4s directly, so maybe the steps have changed since they were originally written?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The basic troubleshooting steps are to first try resetting your phone (hold the on/off and home buttons until you see the Apple logo - ignore the off slider that appears first - then release). If that fails, first try restoring the phone from backup. If that fails, restore the phone as new (since sometimes the problem is saved in your backup so restoring from this backup will only return the problem to your phone). You can follow this guide to restore your phone: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414 (under Restoring your iOS device). At the end of the process you will be given the option to restore from backup or as a new iPhone. These steps are the same for all iPhones, including the 4S.

Thanks for the help.

Is there some way to save my contacts that is separate from the backup? I just tried the reset, and the restore with the back up and neither helped. I don't mind having to redownload a few apps, etc, but I have a lot of contacts that i'd rather not lose and/or have to enter manually if i'm having to completely restore it from scratch.

Thanks again!
