sim card not working after inserting in iPhone 3GS - HELP PLS!

I know that there have been simian posts but please bear with me....

I was previously using a work Nokia phone with an 02 sim card and my wife has an iPhone. She upgraded to an iPhone 4 leaving her 3GS spare. I therefore placed my sim card n the phone and it worked fine with accessing wifi only, which is all that I require. I upgraded the software and again it worked ok for approx 12 hours. Now the phone comes up SIM CARD REGISTRATION FAILED and is permanently saying NO SERVICE. I have put the sim card back in my Nokia phone and it is saying the same. All phones on 02. PLEASE HELP....

Never place a foreign SIM Card in an iPhone*. You can always access Wi-Fi with or without a SIM Card, you just have yourself an expensive iPod Touch.

If you would like to use the iPhone, identify which network the iPhone is supposed to be on and sign a contract.

*The only time a non-AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon SIM card should be placed in the iPhone is if it is unlocked and the carrier allows iPhone on its network.

That link doesn't help this problem. It isn't the iPhone hardware, but rather the SIM.

"No SIM installed" alert (GSM models only)

Remove the SIM card.

Verify that the SIM card is not damaged or dirty, then reinstall the SIM card.

Try turning iPhone off and then on again.

Wait approximately two minutes, then see if iPhone detects the SIM card and if it will register on the network.

If that doesn't work, try another SIM card for that carrier, if possible, to see if it is detected.

If the message still exists, please go to: apple.com/support/iphone/service/faq/ for information on service.

Note: If you need to send your iPhone in for service or if you want to temporarily use a different phone, you may be able to use the SIM card inside your iPhone with another GSM phone.
