Canon Pixma MP620, wireless, & Lion

Hi all

I have a Canon Pixma MP620 that I have not bothered using until now. Rather, have not bothered trying to use until now. I'm running 10.7.3 on a MacBookPro. And I just updated the Canon driver under Software Update

I can print only if it's connected via a USB cable. If I unplug the cable, I still see my printer in System Prefs/Print and Scan, with a little green dot, saying Idle. But if Itry to print anything, even a a page with a couple of words on it, nothing happens. The Canon MP620 print queue shows up inthe Dock, Status says printing, and the horizontal blue and white barber pole progress bar is chugging along, but nothing happens. It's not that I'm too far from the printer; about 18 inches to be exact, the length of the USB cable. I've never bothered to try and print wirelessly before because I figured it would take eons and be a pain in the hole to configure, and so far I think I'm right. Have I missed something here? That I can see the printer while not physically tethered to it would, I assume, tell me the wireless connectivity is there. Why, then, can't I get a page off the thing unless I plug in the USB cable?

Is there some way to wirelessly ping the scanner?

A few things to note;

1. The print queue for a USB printer cannot be used for a wireless connected printer. The print queue that you have in Print & Scan will be for the USB connected MP620. If you disconnect the USB cable and try to print to this print queue then it will not print. So you would also need to have a print queue in Print & Scan for the networked printer and this can only be created after you have the MP620 connected to your wireless router.

2. To connect the MP620 to your wireless network you need to set your network settings into the printer. I don't know if this can be done via the operation panel on the printer. If not, then you can use the Canon IJ Network tool. To use the tool, the printer needs to connected to the Mac via USB cable. You can then open the utility via the Utility tab under Options & Supplies for the USB connected printer to connect it to your wireless router.

3. Once the printer is connected to your wireless network you can then create another printer in Print & Scan. You do this via the Default tab of the Add Printer window, noting the scanner is a separate entry to the printer (where the USB connected device has the printer & scanner under the same entry). With the printer and scanner created, you ensure you select this network connected printer in the print dialog rather than the USB connected printer. To make things easier, you can rename the printers in Print & Scan so that you can easily tell which printer you are selecting in the print dialog.

Hi-

You are right just when you think Cnanon could not be less helpful they mess up the link so go their european site- it still works... and it is the same tool... shame Cannon seems to be run by tools😮

Ok guys, my router has been bad, so we switched it out a couple times within last month. Imagine the frustration of setting up this f***king printer every other week. We finally got a new modem / router, and the steps doesn't work for me.

THANK YOU!! I spent 2 days trying to get my Canon printer to work & all I could see was the scanner. Your input saved me $$ as I was about to buy a new wifi printer due to my frustration. I registered just to say your time to post was greatly appreciated as I am new to Mac computers as just recently switched from a Windows PC to a Macbook Air. Even with experience I don't think I could have figured this one out without your help.

quangtam2159these instructions worked perfectly, we had been suffering with this printer working ONLY on USB for 2 years after we got it to work 1 time and could never get it to work again in spite of hours of work. By following your perfect instructions we were able to print wirelessly after only 10 minutes. Thank you for being so kind and investing the time in creating these perfect instructions.

So the link that liliko posted really helped a lot, and i can now print from my macbook pro (Os X 10.9.5). The problem is I cant seem to find the "scanner function" of the mp620. Anybody got any tips? I tried downloading the the printer driver, the network tool, the CUPS driver and the MP Exchange (or something), but nothing works!

Thank you so much. After several days of installing drivers, software, (all ******** imo), I gave up. And a month later my son wants to print something from his laptop and I'm super frustrated because it *should* be able to find the printer wirelessly and *should* be able to print without a hitch. I found your post and now it does! Thanks again.
