While in the default mode the F5 and F6 keys will function, only when the light levels are low enough for the automatic light sensor to trigger the backlight keyboard.

Mar 31, 2012 6:33 PM in response to pennbankby Nzf38,I bought it 1 month ago but it doesnt work till since 1 month. I selected "Automatically illuminate keyboard in low light" but even the room is really dark it doens work. Should i really reset the smc or ask vor a apple shop.
