Mac Air - Broken hinges without warranty

En December 2008 I bought a macbook air. Now, in 2012, both hinges cracked and the display turned pink. The apple repair guy told me thats a serial defect and, years ago, there was a recall and Apple had repair it, even outside of warranty. But he said that is not valid anymore. So, I bought a new air, but is that true? That recall is not valid anymore?
