Can iphoto automatically update a slideshow with new photos from photo stream?

Im in the middle of googling for the exact same issue/question...just to be clear, I want it to update *while the slide show is playing*....you probably do too...If I find a solution, I will post here
No to both your inquiries.
ah....ok....dont mean to be questioning you but how sure are you? Has apple indicated this is not poss? thx
Very sure, but feel free to spend as much time as possible researching and trying to figure out a way to make it happen.
Best of luck.
Just to clarify, you both mean to update a slideshow that has been created IN iPhoto, and not photos that are being streamed to a screen saver or an Apple TV, yes?
thx Peter...I'm going to keep search...apparently windows photo gallery (comes with W7) does this...but I dont have it here to test... will keep looking.
yes to your last question...but I'd accept *any* slideshow application on Mac that allows me to live feed new photos into a currently running slideshow that can or can't be shown on apple TV... Apple TV is a bonus...
My specific use case is that I'm an event photographer and would like to buy an off the shelf 'slideshow' app that streams recently taken photos onto a large flat screen TV connected to my Macbook Pro ( or ipad). I actually dont care about fancy transitions....just so long as the photo appears for a specified time (in full screen) then cycles to the next photo in the folder indefinately...
hope that clarifies....
You can activate a screen saver that will behave in a similar fashion to a slideshow, but it is a screen saver and not a slideshow.
You will not be able to keep the images on the screen for a specified amount of time.
There may be a thrid party application, but iPhoto is not designed to do what you desire.
nice idea! Just tried it...but it wont update the photos in the screen saver in realtime...have to first get out of it then back in....using the standard screen saver on OS 10.7
I found the solution that does EXACTLY what I want on an ipad... Amazing...simply take photos on your Eye-fi compatible camera (mine is a Canon 5D Mark III) and it will automatically transfer your photo to your ipad running app called Shuttersnitch ($16 in itunes). From there you can either view photos as they come in (small jpeg takes about 5 seconds to appear assuming you have a good wireless network connection...i was using 802.11n).. Here is the icing on the cake..Shuttersnich has a slideshow mode too....you have to have at least 1 photo to start it, but once you do, every subsequent shot you take will insert itself into the slideshow and appear automatically in the stream...no hands or any intervention required....wow.... If you need to move your photos to iphoto after they are taken, its easy..just install the free backup app for your mac desktop, laptop, etc and it will automatically detect your ipad shuttersnitch app and files and download them to your Mac to whereever you want..eg iphoto.
An incredibly beautiful solution....Pls let me know if you have any questions...WOW!
I'm currently looking into setting up a script with Automator to play an iPhoto slideshow based off of the "Photo Stream" album. Buy removing the "repeat" setting within iPhoto and adding a "Loop" action within Automator, it should allow for newly added photos to be included in the slideshow (on the next playback). If Photo Stream needs some time to download the new photos (while the slideshow is not playing), you can add a "Pause" action before the loop action. I haven't tested it yet to see if the pause is necessary (or how long it has to be). My plan is to set up Photo Stream on five IOS devices and a Mac Mini. The Mac Mini will play the slideshow through a projector. I was hoping to have Automator restart the slideshow whenever a new file is added but I haven't had any success yet with that (though it should be possible). I think this is close to working exactly how I intended.
I like your idea but it sort of contradicts the notion of 'stream' in that there is constantly new photos entering the stream...eg there is no end..thus no beginning...How would you know *when* to loop?
If your ultimate goal is to simply be able to project new incoming photos (I'm assumign taken from a camera or iphone or multiple cameras) then you can do this entire thing using shuttersnitch. It will loop if it runs out of new photos in the feed..but if you continue to feed it, it will add photos to the show automatically...If you want, you can even set up an action inside shuttersnitch to save new photos to iphoto or your photos app or photostream if you want them to be saved there...
Guess my question is I'm not 100% sure what your objective is......?
Everything worked with the set up I mentioned. It was an installation for an exposition that allowed visitors to create virtual paintings on five different iPads. When done, they save their painting to the photo library. With Photo share activated on the five iPads and a Mac Mini (connected to a projector), I was able to run a slideshow of all the paintings. In Automator, I created a program that opened iPhoto, selected the recent photos, started a slideshow (without looping). When the slideshow finishes, there's a pause and then the entire process begins again (using "pause" and "loop" actions in Automator). This pause allows enough time for new paintings to be added to the album.
But yeah, Shuttersnitch seems like an interesting option for streaming pictures from cameras.
Danharvest,
Could you please share the Automator script with me? What I am trying to do is not that complicated but there is no tool available for that yet. I want to display a slideshow of photos taken with my SLR camera in real-time. That's it! So far, the only-way to do this is to use an Eye-fi card to transfer photos to a folder in my Macbook and then manually copy them to another folder and start the slideshow. If I use the same folder for the slideshow, the functionality breaks when a new photo is uploaded from the eye-fi card. There is no software that updates the slideshow content in real-time. That's where your script will be useful as Eye-fi can copy the photos directly to iPhoto.
Thank you!
Rajesh
I know that I am very late in the game with this, but for what it's worth. I have used the screen saver function on my MacBook Pro to do exactly what you are asking. Our church had an anniversary party that I wanted to collect other's pictures for future use as well as create an interactive slideshow through out the evening. Here is what I did:
1- Created a public folder on Dropbox that people could email their pictures to - you can generate a QR code to make this easier too.
2 - Pointed my screen saver on my Mac to view pictures from the public folder on Dropbox.
3 - Connected my laptop to a projector, started the screen saver, and viola!
Hope that this helps.
Kind regards,
Wade
But the screensaver (at least in 10.7.5 or 10.8) will not "scan" for new images added. So a "live" updating show where new images are added as an event takes place can not happen.
