How long does battery really last?

The technical info for the iPod Nano says that you get "up to 24 hours" of continuous playback if the battery is fully charged. So how long do you actually get? Lots of MP3 player manufacturers claim large number of hours which actually bear little relationship to reality. Do you really get 24 hours of playback time, or is it a lot less than this?

(I'm talking about the Nanos being sold now - I'm a prospective purchaser.)

Thanks for replying, but how long is "a few hours"?

Again, there is no exact number here but it's well in the double digits. Perhaps somebody else will chime in and give you a number if that's what you are looking for.

If the battery is fully charged at the start, are we talking about more than 10, or less?

Depends on how it's being used. If you are simply playing music from it and don't touch it often, thus waking up the display, you can easily get more than hours of life out of it.

If the backlight is switched off all the time, would that give 24 hours of continuous playback (which is what the adverts claim)?

If you were only listening to music that was synced to the Nano and didn't mess around on it otherwise, you would get close to that number.

The 24 hours is a best case scenarios, but how long it ACTUALLY lasts is dependant on a number of factors including how full the battery really was from its last charge, how bright the brightness setting is set, the amount of the time the backlight is on for the LCD, etc. Most people do get quite a few hours out of them before needing to recharge them.

I have a same problem like you . The battery life run out very quickly . I think its because of the screen . If you keep interactive with the iPod , the battery will run out faster. I think 24 hours , is that you listen to music and dont choose songs , dont see photos , anything but just listen to music . If you see pictures , keep interactive with your iPod often , your iPod can be survived for about 3 4 hours. This is my opinion .

Thank you

That's very useful, thank you.

Although the time was only 11 hours, that's a lot closer to the 24 that the adverts claim, than I've experienced from other MP3 manufacturers. It seems quite common for the reality to be only about 10% of what's claimed, which almost amounts to misleading advertising. At least Apple's products seem to come closer to what they claim.
