What is after OS X 10.9?
After OS X Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) there will be OS X 10.9 which is followed by what? Not 10.10 because .10 is equivalant to .1, will it be OS X 11?
iPad, iOS 5.1

What a silly question, Obviously they will make it OS X 11!

Maybe they will follow the "new iPad" scheme and just start calling it "OS X".
And 10.7.3 is not a proper number representation, so why think of 10.10 as a number with a decimal point.
If it makes you happy, maybe they can change the version display to 10:10. Then you can think of it as a time value. Or at least until they get to 10:60 🙂
And they can get a promotion going with Spinal Tap, just like Microsoft did with the Stone's and "Start Me Up".

I would think that by the time Apple get to 10:60 Apple would have run out of the "Big Cat" names to call the OS.
There is always "Hello Kitty", "Garfield", Silvester", "Tom" (of Tom and Jerry), etc...
There are 41 extant felid's
There are the extinct ones:
Sabretooth
American Lion

While a stretch, there is also the Thylacine, though that is more of a wolf than cat.
X is the Roman numeral for 10, and before it came Mac OS 9.
Mac OS X stands alone and nowhere on the Mountain Lion page does Apple write 10.8. This is because 10.8 is the OS number and the version number (version 8 of OS X). Therefore, Mac OS X 11 doesn't make any sense, because X doesn't equal 11. Either the OS will be labelled OS 11 (I doubt Roman numerals will be used because they are not used for iOS, and XI just doesn't look that trendy) or iOS will replace OS X, since it will have reached a level of maturity and features where universal apps can be created that work across iPhone, iPad and Mac.
you do realise that osx 11 means OS 10 11?
They should have called it mOS (mobile os) and then they could have called the desktop version iOS.
Too late I suppose ... 🙂
Thats actually a pretty good idea u know.
how about the mobile one being called ios and they change the meaning of X to be just like pro or something, and make the desktop os iosx
so to summarise:
Mobile: iOS
Desktop: iOS X
X stands for eXtra or eXcel or something more than 10.
The best way to go now is :
iPhone & iPad : iOS
Macbook Pro & Mac mini & Mac Pro : MacOS (back to their roots)
too bad there's still the iMac, otherwise it would have been perfect 😉
How about OS Xi?
XI is eleven
The i in Xi will reference iOS (the inevtiable combining of OS X and iOS). Apple could have some real fun and call it OS Ξ (OS Xi), the 14th letter of the greek alphabet. It also sounds like someone saying OS I.
All told, if I wanted credit for a guess, this would be the guess I'd take credit for.
Apple has been merging the codebase with iOS. By the time 10.9 comes out next year it should be just about complete and the next version for the Mac after 10.9 would just be iOS.
