Q: I can't download HD rentals to my iPad 3.

I cannot download HD rentals of films or purchased tv shows to my iPad 3. I haven't tried standard quality.

I click the purchase button and it jumps down to the downloads section. I click on it and it isn't there. It's not in the videos app. If I re-try it it tells me that I have already purchased this and that it has not been downloaded and to manage my downloads I have to click on downloads. When I do this my only option is the iTunes terms and conditions link.

My account info is up to date and I can download apps.

This has been on going now for several day now and I've tried it on several different places (so its not just my wifi)

Any help would be appreciated. I would think the iPad 3 would be able to handle any kind of HD movie from apples iTunes store.

Hi, neither can I so you are not alone. I have exactly the same symptoms (in the UK) and have had so since I got the iPad on launch day The iTunes support team have refunded three films so far but haven't offered a solution.

b j t. Thanks for the link but don't see how it helps. I'm in the uk. Also I've also just downloaded contagion full hd and that seems to be working. Just seems to be a majority of others that aren't. Guess I'll be just asking for refunds for the others.

Dave. I'm in the uk too. Tried it up the road in bonnie Scotland no luck and down south in Engerland at my grandparents. Still not working. Managed to get one downloading but don't know what's going on.

Well in a way it's good to know that it's not my network. I was going to book a slot at the local Apple store but won't bother. Seems it's an iTunes fault. I will have to rent from Virgin until this is resolved. Shame as the quality of film from the iPad is excellent.

No error message. I get the same as you 'go to the download manager' but there is nothing there. iTunes have just refunded my third film with the advice I download them to my desktop Mac first and then transfer the film to my iPad.  Not quite the seamless rental experience I was looking for.

The iTunes support staff replied to my email in about two hours and the credit is applied within 5 days or so.  I tried to download the same film incidentally.

do you think this is ipad3 specific?...as i downloaded several sd movies to my ipad2

Also support suggests downloading to pc first, would this not just download the sd

version of the movie though as my pc is not hd ready etc...

Have you tried downloading to your pc yet to see if the hd version works?

I think it is iPad specific for some HD films.  Acting on iTunes support staff advice I successfully downloaded the SD version of Tin Tin without a problem directly to my iPad3. The very helpful member of staff recognises this is a problem as I pointed out that there were others (i.e us) on the message boards discussing the issue. I didn't bother downloading to my Mac first as this too much of a faff just to watch a film so can't help you there. However if you intended to transfer the film from your PC to the iPad then the fact that your PC can't handle HD should be irrelevant really. It's what streams the film to your HD TV that is important.

I'm also experiencing the same issue with HD content downloads with my new iPad (3).

I purchased a single episode of the TV show, 'The Guild'. Once purchased, the show did not auto-download as usual, so I tried going into the 'Purchased' tab in iTunes.app. However, every time that I click to download the show, and select HD (the version I paid for), it goes into the download queue for 1-2 seconds and then vanishes. Attempting the same with the SD version downloads correctly, as well as on PC.

Tried signing out of my store Apple ID, rebooting the iPad, closing all open/background apps, and checking I have enough space left - which I do.

Contacted iTunes support with the issue as I'm all out of ideas.

There is a problem it seems with HD rentals on the new iPad

    From iTunes support:

This is **** again with iTunes Store Support. Thank you for response. I apologize for any delay you have experienced during this communication. I appreciate your bringing this to our attention. Apple is currently working toward a resolution for the issue you have reported. You will receive an email after the matter has been investigated and further information is available.

Bizarrely, if you subsequently rent the same movie in SD and accept the warning that you have already rented the movie, it downloads the HD version (but you probably get charged twice).
