Office 2004 unexpectedly quits

Approximately March 24, 2012 all Office programs will not open and I get a "Excel has unexpectedly quit" message with a reopen and cancel buuton.

I have updated my OS10.6.8 software.

I can go in as another user, but not my regular login.

Programs do not open after Safe Mode startup.

Microsoft has several support requests for the same problem with other MAC folks.

Anybody have the answer?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

You are infected with one of the current strains of the Flashback trojan (google it). It looks like Flashback.I.

I suggest you read over this thread:

"Rosetta" applications suddenly stopped working

Office 2004 is powerpc code which requires Rosetta on intel machines.

I'll give you a couple of terminal commands to get you going but if you don't want to wade through that entire thread (it sort of gets a little lost in the middle but then gets back on track) at least read starting on page 7 starting about here. That is because what I am giving you is not a complete solution even though your powerpc code will probably run without crashing.

Here's the terminal commands. Copy/paste each one and hit return.

rm -rf ~/.MacOSX/environment.plist

rm -rf /Users/Shared/.libgmalloc.dylib

The discussion I referenced starting about page 7 (just notice the link didn't carry over in my post above) has some pretty good info on how to proceed.

I should revise my "standard" post (the one above) the next time (and the way things are going there will be a next) this problem arises. I should add that you should make a note of the mod data of the enviroments.plist file. So then you would need to back up to prior to that date since we don't know all the places trojan code may have been potentially injected.

If you use a earlier TM to revert your system the first thing to check is do do that defaults command to make sure wasn't on your backup.

Well, not necessary "good" to go. I only recently noticed that for some reason when I copy my "standard" reply about this trojan into a new thread as I did in this thread my link referencing page 7 of the other thread I want you to start at reading is being lost. So here it is again.

You really need to read the posts starting there to get a feeling for the scope of the problem and why you should still have concerns on this problem (and that thread is still expanding).

I had the same problem with the office prgrams. The terminal procedures above and at Cnet appears to have solved the problem, However my Pages and Numbers applications also would not open and still will not after the procedures. The error message stating there is a problem opens almost immediately. Any suggestions?
