Apr 1, 2012 5:10 PM in response to meghanabendreby meghanabendre,Correction: My library file is on an external drive. I got Aperture to load by creating a new library. Then I tried to switch libraries and selected the old one that is on the external drive, it threw an error: "Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library's volume is not supported"
Does this mean I need to copy the library to an internal location, upgrade and then move it back? Will the move back to external be supported?
Thanks!
Meghana.

Meghana, how is your external drive formatted? Is it not MacOS Extentended?

I need to transfer my pictures on my hard drive to an external drive. I've started the "relocate masters" process. Once I transfer everything, can I delete everything from my desktop hard drive?
Thanks,
cdiehm

perhaps you'd better start your own discussion and not hijack this thread: without more information on your setup would it be difficult to encourage you to erase your system drive!

Apr 2, 2012 1:56 PM in response to Frank Caggianoby meghanabendre,Sorry, Frank. That didn't work. Still see an error that says "The library could not be opened because the file system of the library's volume is unsupported."
It is puzzling that Aperture 2.1 could recognize the external hard drive's file system but 3.2.3 does not.

Apr 2, 2012 2:44 PM in response to meghanabendreby Frank Caggiano,★HelpfulDidn't see that in the second message you posted. What is the filesystem of the drive the library is on? How did the library get on that drive?
You will need to copy the library off that drive and reformat it to Mac OS X Extended. Is there other data on the drive besides the Aperture library? If so you will need to backup all the data, reformat the drive and restore it.

Apr 3, 2012 8:47 AM in response to meghanabendreby meghanabendre,I wasn't aware that new version of Aperture needs a Mac OS X Extended formatted external drive. The older version was able to read from my FAT 32 formatted drive.
Thanks for your help!

Then you have been very lucky, Meghana, it has been like this since Aperture 1.0, see here:
Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library

Apr 3, 2012 11:54 AM in response to léonieby meghanabendre,Wow, now I wonder how it was working before.
I know that I had to format another external drive that holds videos for it to work with iMovie. But this FAT 32 formatted drive has worked with Aperture until I upgraded Aperture last weekend.
Strange, indeed.
