I can't restore my iPhone

It just gets to the end of the process and comes up with an error "The iPhone cannot be restored. An unknown error occured (-1)" what is this?

I returned from holiday yesterday and after getting off the airplane I switched my phone back on and got the message that I need to connect to my iTunes and re-activate it. I tried this and now I just get told restore the phone. It gets to the end of the process and I recieve the message "The iPhone cannot be restored. An unknown error occured (-1)"

I click ok then it says iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode and must be restored............ cycle through the process and get back to where I started.

What do I need to do?

iPhone 3GS, iOS 5.0.1

Try these:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3694

if they don't work then find the iPhone updater logs:

Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[Username folder]\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Updater Logs

Mac OS X: ~/Library/Logs/iPhone Updater Logs

Windows Vista and Windows 7: C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Updater Logs

open them is a text editing application and search for the text "unable to convert ramrod error 1004". if that is not in any of the logs then call AppleCare, they'll want to know
