i can't open an .ichat file. HELP??

i can't open an .ichat file. HELP??

i am running iChat AV 2.1 (v153). my friend sent me a log of one of our conversations and was running iChat AV 3.1 or something later. the file sent is a *.ichat file and i can't open it with my ichat 2.1. can anyone help me with this problem?

i cannot use iChat when the "there is no default application specified to open the document ******.ichat (choose application) (cancel)" dialogue window opens up because iChat is greyed out.

iBook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Hi oluashf093,

As was under th impression that iChat 2.x would open iChat 3 saved files.

It should be able to be opened by using the Open With option and using Text Edit alothough the bubbles and formatting will be different

thank you ralph. i've opened the file using text edit and can now access the information contained. however, do you have any leads as to why my iChat 2.1 is not able to open the *.iChat file sent by my friend? i know that part of the reason is the extension it is saved as.

iChat 2.1 files save with *.chat extensions whereas iChat 3.1 and beyond save as *.iChat extensions. however, from that point on, i am completely lost. if i should move this topic to another forum, please let me know. thank you.

It probably has to do with the way the two applications encode the information. Since iChatAV 3.x is older than iChatAV 2.x, things can change and older versions may not support opening newer files.

It could possibly have to do with the change of the frameworks in iChatAV 3.x, though I can't be certain.

Hi oluashhf093,

Umm Yes the extensions do appear to be different. iChat 2.x = .chat and iChat 3 = .ichat

I also went to the File menu to see if it could be Saved As a iChat 2. format but this is not possible.

When I get time I will open My Panther disk and see if TextEdit will do a SAve *** if you change the extension to chat to open a iChat 3 in iChat 2
