replace a hard disk
Replacing the standard hard disk to a new ATA 7200 2Tb
The second one does not appear in the finder
What to do???
Power Mac G5 (Late 2005), Mac OS X (10.5.8), Power Mac G5 Quad

Is the new drive a SATA 3 drive? If so, and if it is a Western Digital, it needs a jumper to limit it to SATA 2.
Put a jumper accross pins 5 and 6:
If the drive is a Hitachi 7K, it should work without jumpers.
If the drive is a Seagate, all bets are off.
If the drive is a green drive (a 5400 RPM drive), again, all bets are off.
Seagates and green drives don't work well in a G5.
It is a Seagate 2Tb 7200rpm SATA II
All bets are off
The problem is since I changed by accident all de privilages, including the systeem files
I changed the system harddisk to a new Seagate 2Tb SATA II; install OSX 10.5.8
The PowerMac is like reborn by running the start-up disk in the "B" postion (lower)
Then I replaced the second disk too with a same, new Seagate 2Tb SATA II
The hard disk in the "A" position of the plate rack is not recognized by the Power Mac and remains invisible.
I changed both disks; withe the same result
What to do?
It seems odd that the PowerMac runs fine with the Seagate in the lower position, but the same model Seagate doesn't work in either position--is that right? Does the new Seagate appear in Disk Utility, or under "Serial-ATA" in "About this Mac/Hardware"? If it does show under Disk Utility, you may need to partition it before the Finder can recognize it.
If A position isn't recognizing them, check the SATA cable connections on the Logic Board end, mine came loose when adding a drive.
Yes that's right, it is more strange, when I change the position of both egal hard disks from A to B v.v.
Both drives come with OSX 10.5.8
Both drives appear in Disk Untility, but not together
Always that drive, wich is moutend in de "B" position (lower)
With "System Profile" the same result; only the disk in de "B" postion appears
How to inspect the cable connection to on the Logis Board ?
Is it possible the probelem has something to do with the change of all de privilages during the situation with the old standard drives ?
Doubtful it privileges.
To check the cable you have to pull both drives & follow the cables down as I recall.
Thanks
Tomorrow i try to inspect the cables
In Holland it's now 22.50 PM

Yeah, the connectors on the logic board are right above the top PCI connector on the logic board. A card in the top position will likely obscure the SATA connectors. You shouldn't have to pull the drives.
Thanks OCG! 🙂
Thanks for all the instructions.
I have inspected the connectors (off and on)
No change, still the disk in the position "A" does not apear in the finder.
I still do not understand, what's the reason of the problem with the disk in postion "A"

One at a time, try to swap the SATA Power cable from B to A drive, then the SATA Data cable from B drive to A drive... might need B drive out to do it, can't remember.
Thanks
This will take some time.
That's no problem, but tomorrow I will give you feed back.
Just makes sure the pins on your boot drive are set to Master and the Secondary set to Slave. If you don't know the pin combinations, you can check on Wikipedia or on your drive sticker if they're listed there.
Thanks for piping in Jim, great to see you helping out here, but G5s all use SATA drives where Master/Slave/Single do not apply anymore, that's for PATA/IDE drives. 🙂
Solution of the replace-problem hard disks PowerMac G5 Quad
It turned out that only the new 2TB drives were not recognized in position "A" or the "B" position.
The original standard 500Gb (Hitachi) were well recognized in the positions "A" and "B"
Also a 2TB drive in "B" and a 500Gb in "A" are visible in the Finder;vice versa, it was only the 500GB disk is visible in the Finder.
AnyFix (www.anyfix.nl) found that:
* The PowerMac G5 Quad (late 2005) has an outdated SATAcontroller, which supports only specific hard drives
* The Seagate hard drive was thus not recognized by the PM G5,
Solution:
The new 2TB Sata drive has been replaced by a Western Digital hard drive.
