Easiest way is to purchase a Camera Connection Kit and connect your camera, with the flash card inside, directly to your iPad for down,leading the photos.

Some users have had success connecting a compact flash card reader but it is not technically supported.

Get the Apple Camera Connection Kit.

I have a couple CF-to-USB adapters that work with the Camera Connection Kit, but have a couple others that draw too much current. For those that draw too much current, I have a powered USB hub that supplies the additional current needed.

I agree that the best way is to connect the camera's USB cable to a Camera Connection Kit.

The camera connection kit can only be used with a camera or SD card. Doesn't work wit a CF card. There are several 3rd party CCKs that can interface a CF card. Do a Google search.
