iTunes 10.6.1 STILL won't play videos on Win7 64-bit

This has been a problem ever since iTunes was "enhanced" to eliminate the need for QuickTime - instead of no longer requiring same, I can't play videos in anything BUT.

I've been complaining about this for six months or more. When you start a video in iTunes, the audio starts but the video hangs and the progress bar at the bottom of the screen shows the '% complete' marker pinned to the RH side of the bar and the time is counting down on the RIGHT, not the left.

Is anyone else having this problem??

WTH,

It happens with all videos - I have purchased quite a few from the iTunes Store and also created my own, and neither type is viewable in iTunes.

I'll check out the troubleshooting page and let you know if any suggestions there help.

Much obliged!

Update: I tried all the steps on the troubleshooting page with no success, but I'm not surprised. Most of the tips deal with making changes to QuickTime configuration settings - but my problem started when the first version of iTunes that no longer required QuickTime was released.

Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Bingo - your persistence is greatly appreciated. I wasn't even aware I had any plug-ins installed.

Now ... where do I find them? The iTunes help mentioned visual effects, but making changes to the visualizer settings once I restarted iTunes in normal mode made no difference.

Your next suggestion is eagerly anticipated. 🙂

Update - the article suggestion looking for plug-ins in the following locations:

C:\Users\username\App Data\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes Plug-ins\

C:\Program Files\iTunes\Plug-ins

The first folder is empty (even with hidden files revealed); the second doesn't exist. I did find some plug-ins at C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes\Mozilla Plug-ins, but deleting those had no effect.

Can iTunes be started in safe mode from the command line/a shortcut?

I believe the Apple Push process (APSDaemon.exe) is also stopped when starting iTunes in Safe Mode. Since there aren't any plug-ins, maybe something is conflicting with that service.

Try temporarily killing the process from CTRL+ALT+Delete or disabling it in MSConfig.

If it works, you'll probably want to look at the security software on the computer, run through this -> iTunes: Troubleshooting security software issues

Major sigh ... I went into Task Manager and killed that process directly, then tried running a downloaded video. No luck.

As for security software, I've been using MS Security Essentials for the better part of two years and haven't had any problems.

No, this problem started with the release of iTunes that no longer used QuickTime to play videos. Damned if I know why ... but I seem to be the only person having this particular problem.

Is there a way to start iTunes in safe mode from either the command line or a shortcut, via one or more parameters?

I didn't solve it so much as I've got a workaround. It's definitely due to some sort of visualization add-in that (a) is fouling up the video player and (b) can't be accessed, disabled or uninstalled.

Now, before I click on the iTunes icon, I hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys simultaneously. Keep them pressed until you see a dialog popup that says you're launching iTunes in safe mode. This affects NOTHING other than it disables whatever visualization gunk was installed, and it allows you to play all media and do all of the other normal functions, just like it used to.

Hope this helps.

scmbis,

Thank you for this thread -- I had an identical problem and followed your trail of workarounds.

Last night I was able to solve the problem by following Apple's instructions here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1925

Like you, I found that running in Safe Mode was a successful workaround, but I didn't want to do that all the time. Like you, I looked for addins but didn't find any (except the Mozilla ones that probably didn't affect me since I don't run Mozilla).

Two important facts from the instructions above:

  • Uninsntall six pieces of software, not just iTunes
  • Uninstall them in a specific order

Here's my recap of the instructions:

A. Uninstall six programs

  1. iTunes
  2. Quick Time
  3. Apple Software Update
  4. Apple Mobile Device Support
  5. Bonjour
  6. Apple Application Support

B. Use Windows Explorer to validate that all remnants of these programs are actually gone

C. Re-install iTunes. (It doesn't mention re-installing the other 5 products; maybe that happens automatically as a result of the iTunes intall?)

This worked for me. After the install I was immediately able to see (in Windows) movies that I had purchased from iTunes.
