Network configuration has changed

Hi there,

I'm looking for a solution to my WiFi internet connection.

I haven't used my MacBook Pro laptop in the last week or so - which means there is no way I have done any changes to the network confirguration. However when I now try to connnect to the internet via a Hub - which is previously set up on the macbook and worked no problem - is now not working at all.

I have gone through the steps to try and fix the problem, but no luck and unfortunately I'm not an Apple Guru yet to solve the problem or to look for other solutions.

Please can you help me giving some advise what to do exactly and try to fix it?

If you need more info, please let me know!

Many thanks in advance,

Sophie

Hi Grant,

Sorry if I wasn't clear enough.

I'm staying at another place now and before my Mac was working fine at home with my wireless internet. Also, I have stayed at this house as well before and had used their wireless internet with no problem. However now for some reason it does not want to connect to the internet.

The 'network diagnostic' takes me through several steps, where I have to choose the network to connect to. Once I have choosen the network it send me an error message saying ' the network configuration has changed.'. When I click on OK it asks me whether I use DHCP or PPPoE. I choose DHCP - according to the description.

The next question is whether I use a DSL or cable modem - my answer is NO as I use wireless...

Next: Is there any device connected directly to your internet connection besides this computer, such as hub, switch, or router. - The answer is YES as I can see a HUB connected to the wireless modem. (Although my computer/macbook is not directly connected to the internet.)

The next is that I need to restart the device - once its done the next question is:

Are there any other devices such as routers, firewalls or managed switches connected directly to the device that just restarted and between that device and this computer. - my answer is YES I guess..!?

Again, I have to re-start everything...and once done it tells me that the problem cannot be fixed.

So this is my problem...and was wondering if anyone can help me!?

Let me know if you need any further info and many thanks for your help!

You likely need more technical help. You are confusing quite a few terms, technologies and products here.

You connect ot a base station via wireless. But tht simply replaces the thernet cord. Next, that device has a router in it (not just a hub, a hub is different, and i'll guess you dont have one). that connects either to a cable modem or a DSL modem. The cable or DSL modem handles the data over the cable or telco's wire. You need to find out which, and whether you need to then use DHCP (most likely) or PPPoE (possibl for DSL).

Keep in mind - you must connect to wifi; establish an IP connection either to the router (DHCP) or through a tunnel (PPPoE) in some forms of DSL, and also deal with any security along the way. The "ntwork has changed" means just that. Once you configure your mac for a specific network, if oyu read the instructions, it ays to save that with a specifi name like "home" "work" or "Sally's house". Then you cna switch between them.

Get all the facts, then come back. Better yet ask the hosue owner what the connection is and get the configurtion instructions from that company. we can't guess.

As usual, i stringly suggest you get a good introductory book on computng and macs in general - these are not problems, they are basics. I suggest David Pogues "Mac OSX the missing manual". Others may be fine too, but its an easy read,

Uh, thanks Grant!

Well, that's sure that I'm not a mac expert. But I only know that it has worked previously and now it is not working. I don't think they have done any changes to the settings of their WiFi since I was able to connect it last and my PC laptop can connect easily without any problem even now.

My macbook was also able to connect previously and can always connect to any WiFi when there is one available. But for some reason it doesn't like it now...!?

They do have a router, a WD box - which I don't know what it stands for!? - and a Home Hub 2.0 - these are all connected to each other in some ways and I have restarted them several times as advised by the network diagnostic, but didn't help.

As I said it has worked before with my mac...now it tells me that my network configuration has changed. To me it is weird!?

But thank you for your help and effort anyway. Fortunately there are other PCs in the house to access the internet. 😉

Does the router allow new devices for connection based on a whitelist of MAC addresses? (could have been implemented since you last visited the place, even without the users knowing it, over a firmware upgrade)

If so, ask the home owner to access the router admin page (should be an IP address such as http://192.168.1.2), and allow your Airport chip MAC address into the fold (you'll find it in System Preferences, under Network, then Airport, Advanced, then Airport: the MAC adress of your Airport chip is displayed at the bottom of the pane (looks like 00:14:67:af:76:98, and that's just an example)). You can highlight it, copy it, and paste it in the proper text field in the router admin page. You'll probably have to restart the router for the changes to come into effect.
