Hi there, can i kindly check whether if i lost my mac pro in singapore...Is there anyways that i can locate where's the machine now...
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
If you were running OS X Lion and had an iCloud account set up on it, and had enabled the location feature, you could potentially track it at www.iCloud.com.
Other than that, there simply is no way to possible track it now, sorry.
The notebook must be connected to the internet for that feature to work, right? If the person who found it doesn't connect to the internet, I think you won't be able to locate it.
Yes, any sort of remote location tracking like that needs a data connection for the device and server to communicate, so not reliable at all anyway.
Try using Prey... as per its description, it auto-connects to nearest open wifi network... let us know if it worked for u...
😕
Kind of pointless now isnt't it? Since the op has already lost the laptop, how on earth is he going to install Prey on it?
And again, any internet based location application is relatively easily defeated (just turn the device off as soon as you steal it or find it).
Yes i did register in icloud but when i tried locating it...the msg shown OFFLINE...
Bless that the person whom pick up will use it so i can keep on tracking..
But what happen if the person whom took away my machine was an expert and jux do a reformat on my machine...Will i get lost track after the person reformat...?
Yes, if they just reformat and reinstall the OS to sell it, for example, that blows away all your information including the iCloud account and all its settings.
As I say, any software based, network dependent location feature is not a security feature really at all - a convenience feature if or when it works, but that is about it.
But i thought icloud ws register under my name and machine serial number...even they reinstall icloud from my machine..i still can log in with my id from another pc....
Plus i ask apple staffs today, they told me that inside apple products, there's a thing call apple chips..and all this chips are with our serial numbers...So i might had a chance to get it back...However theres lot of different info so i really had no idea which is true or not...:)
No, unless your iCloud account is setup and configured on the machine, you cannot locate it. There is no way to track the machine by serial number, and Apple will not (and never has) involve itself with finding or trying to find lost or stolen items (at least, not without a court order to do so).
I'm sorry, but there is NO way to track it.
Hmm....is quite disappointing...thought there might be something special after spending that much for a better products...however Thanks alot for everybody reply....I m jux blessing i could got it back...:)
Did you check with the cops... maybe you could get some clue from security cams etc...
Yaya...will approach cops tomorrow and see what they suggest...Update everybody tomorrow....Thanks alot...:)
Hi everyone, sorry for the late reply...However i had make a police report but according to wat they say...It cant be trace by any IP address or whatsoever...And if wanna search by mobile me unless search within few days after lost...or lost if the mac pro been turn off too long, the location will automatically disappear...however hopes of finding back my mac pro percentage is equals to zero....:(
