How to make percentage pie charts on formula data, or A/B percentages in pie charts?

Hello!

I'm looking to make sum, as I've found out, "complex" pie charts from data in a numbers spread sheet.

I am writting a thesis paper on the affects of video games on children, and I have created a survey for children to fill out.

I have input all this data into Numbers '09, and I'm trying to sus out the information in the data.

I have attached a few screen shots to show some of the data.

The problem is when I'm trying to show A/B percentages in a pie chart. I'm not looking for SUM percentages (where numbers adds the two numbers together, then divides them) but rather with two categories, I want their given procentages to show up in a pie chart. Is this possible in Numbers '09?

For instance let's say I want to show in a pie chart, the percentage of all the children surveyed, who are 17 years old.

In the screen shots, you can see that I've tried, and they are not giving the results I'm looking for.

Thanks for the help!

Hi j,

By convention, a pie chart represents the whole group as a full circle, and parts of that group as sectors of a circle. For this chart, you will need two sectors,

  1. Children who are 17 years old AND play.
  2. All other children surveyed

Similar principals apply to the chart identified as Chart 3 in your examples. Each segment represents a part of the whole. The whole is always 100%.

in this case, the whole is the 102 children surveyed, the three parts are:

  1. 17 year olds who do not play
  2. 17 year olds who do play
  3. all the others

Some of the necessary numbers are on your table, although they are in different locations from those on mine. Others (eg the number of children not fitting the categories) will require calculation.

Barry
