I have had my iPhone 4s for less than a week and when I call people/they call me/I listen to voicemails, I can barely hear the other person - they sound very distant or muffled, no matter how much I turn up the volume.
If I have the phone on speaker or listen with headphones, I can hear them perfectly fine.

Have you peeled off the protective plastic film from the front of the phone?
Probably a speaker issue. It's probably best to take it to an Apple Store if you have one nearby.
Thank you sooo much !! That was the problem. The salesperson put the case on and didn't take off the plastic covers.. I can hear great now.
