Macbook Pro and Powerpoint (Yechhh)

I've been using my MacBook Pro (2.0) for a few days. Powerpoint is just unacceptably slow. It takes a long time to open up and then usability is low. There is a horrible latency when typing in a text box. Doing any action takes at least twice as long as Powerpoint on the old Powerbook (which was not all that fast). Its bad enough that I am considering returning my MacBook. Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm not holding my breath that Microsoft will release a universal version of Office soon so this is a killer concern for me. I also tried to convert existing Powerpoints to Keynote 3 and it crashes if the Powerpoint is over 300k (which nearly every file is). I'm very frustrated - any help out there???

I use Powerpoint almost every day on my Powerbook, and the performance is fine. I tried Powerpoint on a MacBook in a retail store for a while (created some slides, changed the presentation theme a few times, etc., etc.), and it seemed fine there, too. Not snappy, but roughly the same as on my Powerbook.

It sounds to me like something is odd with your presentation file, or your Powerpoint installation, or both.

I'll try to do a reinstall of MS Office and see if that helps my problem. The typing latency almost is like a memory allocation issue but I should have plenty of memory and the files aren't that big (and I close down most of my other programs just to be sure). Maybe a reinstall will help - just looking to see if others are having this issue.

Kappy - my powerpoints work fine on other Powerbooks in my workgroup so I don't believe there is a corruption issue. I'm using the trial version of Keynote that is bundled with the MacBooks but it is supposed to be a full version that just expires 30 days after first use. So - I'm scratching my head here. BTW - I had a colleague try to open up the same powerpoint on his Powerbook using Keynote 2 and it opened fine. It just won't work on the Macbook using Keynote 3.

I don't know what to suggest. I've tried my one over 300 K presentation both on my MacBook Pro using Keynote and Power Point, and it works without any problem. Power Point is a bit slow initially, but once up with the presentation loaded it was acceptable.

I suspect you have a problem, but I don't think it's with Power Point or Keynote.

I don’t know what kind of documents you are planning to create or the extensive quality you require, but I purchased the Office 2004 (student teacher edition) and it is a universal application and should run quite well in rosetta. I am new to Mac’s so I am still learning, but I bought it purposely for school as I will be required to develop these types of documents. Hope this helps.

While I would expect powerpoint to be a bit slow under rosetta, I'm surprised by what you report and about the crash. Even though you just got your machine, I'd suggest you repair permissions. Faulty permissions can cause programs to crash unexpectedly, files to take forever to load, and all sorts of other disasters.

Shut down, put in your install disk, start up holding down the 'C' key. Choose disk utilities from whichever menu it is in, and then repair permissions on your HD.

Often when you install software, something can get screwed up and repairing permissions does the trick.

If it uses rosetta then it's not a universal application. MS Office won't be universal for at least another 6 months. Maybe if the original poster creates another slideshow and tries to import that into Keynote 3, to see if it's Keynote or the Powerpoint file that's creating the problem. You might find out if the reinstall of MS Office will help too.
