Converting old Apple ID into iCloud Apple ID

I just got a new iPhone and I cannot log in to iCloud with my apple id that I have always had, which is first inital, last name. iCloud keeps asking for an email address. How can I convert my existing Apple ID (first initial, last name) to a new iCloud ID (email address) without losing / separating all my old data?

All AppleIDs now, and for some years, have had to be a full valid email address. If you go to https://appleid.apple.com/ and log in, you should be able to change the primary name to a valid email. Doing it that way will keep the account linked to your past purchases, so you loose nothing.

Then, you can login to iCloud and create your account there (which btw is going to create an @me.com email address which you select, but which also can be used as an AppleID).

SO I have the same problem, I have an old iTunes account ID that is a single word, I can log into App Store iTunes all ok but not I cloud, I just tried to log in as you say to Apple ID to associate an email address but it will not let me log in using that single word and password. The irony is I used that log in to log into this forum with no issues ? Any tips .
