Q: Change language on Blutooth keyboard

How do I change the Blutooth keyboard to German for example. When I switch the virtual keyboard to German before pairing the Blutooth I get a y every time I types z and visa versa. How do I "tell" the Blutooth keyboard that I am typing German text?

Thanks,

Euderma

Go to Settings > General > Keyboards and tap on Deutsch.  You should see a menu of Software and Hardware options.  Under Hardware, choose a layout which corresponds to your hardware blutooth keyboard.

I think you should also be able to switch keyboards by doing apple/command + space.

    Hello Tom,

thanks for your reply, this really helped me. I knew how to set up the virtual keyboard on the iPad, but what I did not know was how to switch between the Englsih and German keyboard uisng the Command - Space shortcut. While I was able to switch the Bluetooth keyboard to "German" there is still an oddity as the letters "y" and "z" are switched. If I tyoe a German word like zu (English - to) and press the "z" key it prints a "y" on the iPad screen, and visa versa. So, somehow the key mapping gets messed up when switching keyboards. Starengely enough it happens just with those two keys, this is "consistent" with teh "behavior" of the virtual German keyboard, with the exception that the "z" and "y" keys actually are swapped on the virtual keyboard. Any ideas what is going on here?

I have a "work around" - I am retired high tech guy, so we were always looking at work arounds :-). I can do the "coding" in my head and press the "Y" key whne I wnat to type a "z", but that is getting old fast. The other option is to turn off auto correct on the iPad and just leave the Bluetooth keyboard on "English" just need to proof read my typing before sending.

Thanks again foir taking the time to reply, if you have any additional ideas feel free to email me,

    Thanks, Wolfgang Dempke a.K.a Euderma

When you tap the item for German on the keyboard list, what layout is checked under the Hardware category?

    Tom,

I am afraid I don't understand what you mean by "what layout is checked under the Hardware category",

    Could you please elaborate, thanks

    Wolfgang

Can you go to the screen which has the list of the keyboards which you have activated?  When you are there tap once on the item for German/Deutsch.  A menu will come up with a list of Software and Hardware keyboard layouts.  You must set the Hardware layout to correspond to the hardware keyboard you are actually using.

    Tom,

YOU DID IT!! The layout was not set to QWERTY, it was set to QUERTZ, which is why the "y" and "z" keys were swapped. Thanks for all your help, I am impressed with your knowledge and willingness to help. I am a Windows guy, worked for ten years for a micro-processor company. But my wife has an iMac and we both have iPads and iPod Touches, so I am slowly moving over :-).

Thanks again, I REALLY APPRECIATE your help.
